Driving downtown from Ohare last night just as the sun set, this building looked as black as Hancock/Sears. I was so surprised. The blue glass color was nowhere near as apparent as Trump Tower. Perhaps it was because half the building’s mass is angled downward. Unique for a glass tower, to say the least.

Excellent addition to the skyline!

I wish black or shades of black were a thing again.

I saw a photo of the Legacy at sunset and it looked blackish as well, and bad ass.

This isn't the same photo but gives the same idea. The other photo gave off more of a "bronzy black" like Sears Tower does at times.

I always wished Optima 1 was upside down. Blue on the bottom, black on top.

Hard to know without seeing, but it sounds just like a sun angle + building orientation + different glass colors situation

Trump tower has a very neutrally colored glass, not particularly blue at all — it picks up late day reflections really well. It also has a large exposed face that angles just about exactly towards O'hare. A late day reflection with a southern hanging sun is going to pick up that surface from your vantage point in a way few other buildings would. Vista's glass is all vertically oriented, so it's shape wouldn't affect this, but it's glass is quite a bit darker and no large surfaces point due NW like 401 Wabash.

walking by vista the last few days and the blow-through floor looks different/less prominent. not sure if that's been mentioned here.

I asked this question about a year ago to someone on reddit who claimed to be working on them, here's what he said:

Quote:
We’re already in there working. So we’re only working on the hotel cars currently. The hotel goes up to the 11th floor only. There are 10 units being worked on currently. Because of the massive nature of the building, the high rise residential elevators (8 in total I believe, don’t quote me there) will be worked on in sections (jumps) as the building goes up.

The more I analyze the building, the more I agree the blow through floors are a terrible scar on the design. I'm not convinced the glass is bad though.

At least the blow-thru floor has intentionality to it. It doesn't break the building aesthetically. The seemingly random, splotchy-looking black ventilation (or whatever it is) on the south face of the building, however, is a curse on the Chicago skyline. Tourists will come here and see the blow-thru and be like "okay, sure" but when they look at that ventilation they will be like "wtf"

I agree especially since there are relatively easy and inexpensive ways to make the ventilation blend in better with the rest of the building.
