Calgary, one man dead and another left in serious condition after a weekend shooting and also a stabbing death occurring downtown. To top that off, a body engulfed in flames was discovered in Fish Creek Park, that death is yet to be determine as criminal.

For some reason there were a lot of gun-related incidences, even in the 905 North too.

Population growth.

The murder rate is pretty much in line with historical norms, but the population has also been growing pretty dramatically. There has been a rise in the number of homicides in recent years, but that corresponds with the larger population. 132 homicides for a region of approximately 7 million people works out to a rate of 1.9/100,000, which isn't too far off the national rate.

It's just jokes, Winnipeg was bad last year but they will have better years to come I bet. Calgary had less than 20 which is pretty good, but it looks like we are in for a big bump this year if current trends continue. Just the ebb and flow of life in a city...

Burning body deemed suicide, can't imagine the pain that someone must be in to feel that lighting oneself on fire will ease that pain.

It's not so much a glamourization of it, necessarily. The portrayal in popular culture certainly makes it more appealing, but there are a lot of kids out there who pretend to be in gangs but aren't actually and they turn out fine, and then there are kids who never show much interest in that kind of lifestyle, but end up in gangs because their families fell apart and they had no where else to go or no one else to lean on. In Thunder Bay these days with home takeovers (a phenomenon where gangs hijack a low income family's home by providing for them in exchange for sheltering gang members) some kids literally have no choice to escape it; it just moves into their house.

And I say this from the perspective of someone who volunteers with youth and sees some of the worst of it. My neighbourhood is pretty lucky because there isn't any large scale low income housing, it's all single family homes rented out, often with an owner living nearby and keeping an eye on things. In the suburban developments it's a different story; within weeks, those gangs can colonize an entire rowhouse block by breaking down the firebreaks in their attics and basements, making enforcement difficult and standoffs long and intense.

Fortunately for us, the government has given us exactly fuck all in police funding to deal with it.

That is depressing. It's like having parasites, but only in this case the parasites are human.

Shooting in Ottawa's Centretown this morning. One dead, three seriously injured, including a 15 year old teen. Police seem to think it was "targeted". Suspect still at large.

It happened on Gilmour Street between Kent and Lyon, a few blocks south of the Central Business District. I drove by this morning on my way to work: about a dozen police cars and multiple paramedics.

Ottawa's first homicide of 2020.

Doubtful. Calgary will remain as bland and devoid of culture as is Phoenix or Houston, though with a much, much lousier climate.
