It was demolished in 1942 at a cost of $100. They gave the steel to the war effort..

I'm still more impressed by such architectural gems as the one below than many modern, comtempory buildings,

Why was it demolished, it does not look too outmoded? Also, this post office is quite similar in design to Erie's former federal court building/post office that was replaced in the 1930s by a typical art deco structure. The citizens of Erie were quite devastated by its destruction.

Many cities had similar Post Offices. Most are gone now. They were not very effiecent designs. They has small rooms that did not work wll with the automated systems for mail handling that became the norm in the 1920's and 30's. They has poor ventilation and many were considered death traps in the case of fire. So most were demolished and replaced with larger more modern structures. These are some of the many reasons that were used to justify the replacement of the old Minneapolis Post Office back in the 1930's.
