Here we go again, back to bargain basement Alberta.

What a great place it was to live in 90s and early 2000s.

Sigh.

Do you have any citations for this? I've heard on mention of this in the news which is very weird.

This apparently just happened today. Further clarification is 10% cut this year, 10% next year, then 2%, then 1%.

I have a very close relationship with a senior director in the gov’t

There’s something coming down the “pipe” in the next while apparently that’ll probably be even more controversial but I can’t say what that is at this time

American study suggests Kenney's 1/3rd tax cut for the rich will only result in enriching further the top 1%

Yeah back in the 90’s when Alberta still outspent every other province.

If we've got the highest GDP per capita, the highest wages, it follows that we are going to have higher public spending. Admittedly I haven't looked very hard, but it looks like we have the lowest public spending as a % of GDP out of the provinces.

It's no big secret JK is going to try to cut the entire Public Sector wages by 1 to 3%. If he thinks he's going to succeed, then he is delusional. Unlike in the neo-liberal 90s, we are in a different time. Labour laws and legal precedent won't work in his favour.

I think it's a big secret to a lot of people. I don't know anyone who's heard any of this stuff. A 23% cut would be major news. Some things need to be cut but 90s style every department takes the same % cut must be avoided at all costs. That's not being fiscally responsible. It's being fiscally stupid.

I'd call it fiscally lazy, looking for nice numbers vs detailed analysis. It would be nice to have a running analysis of what we're paying each department on a per-something basis (per capita pop of Ab, per some sort of deliverable or benefit, etc) so that it would be obvious when one government is unnecessary inflating the budget of a department vs other provinces, or conversely if there have been consecutive belt tightening and cuts it might show when 'cutting the waste/fat' is no longer a reasonable promise.

So apparently, the Unite the alt-Right Alberta government is refusing to acknowledge (let alone congratulate) the town of Raymond, for what is actually a pretty significant achievement.

The question becomes, is downplaying or ignoring Canadian success stories a good political move for the Cons?

RAYMOND, Alta. — A small Alberta town is the first in Canada and likely the first in North America to produce as much of its own electricity as required to run town operations.

It’s called “net zero” as far as electricity is concerned and it has been achieved in Raymond, population about 4,000, by installing solar panels on nearly all town-owned buildings.

It is an approach other towns and municipalities could also embrace, said Jason Atkinson of Enmax, the Calgary-based utility that partnered with Raymond on its solar generation project.

Has there been any sightings of Peter Singh? He's the guy who was caught bribing people to vote Kenney in the UCP leadership race, and took names and credit card numbers off his business computer so as to sign people up for the Unite the alt-Right without their knowledge so that mass votes could be made via the Internet.

Said hi to Peter Singh this morning at the Premier's breakfast. He was passing out coffee to the general masses.

Singh is a a backbench MLA in a large caucus, his speaking time will be equivalent to the back up goalie in a Stanley Cup final game.

Peter Singh hasn't been caught doing anything. He hasn't even been charged with anything.

Minor details like that are not important to Suburbia. He's more concerned about being able to use his little catch phrase.

Peter Singh

In addition to the cabinet ministers, at least one UCP MLA has also been interviewed by the federal police force.

Just before the provincial election, RCMP raided Calgary-East MLA Peter Singh's business as part of the voter fraud investigation.

Singh also faces allegations of "fraud, forgery, improper inducement and bribery" in his effort to secure the UCP nomination in his riding. That investigation is being carried out by Alberta's election commissioner.

Four cabinet members, including Premier Jason Kenney, have not yet responded to requests for confirmation of interviews by the RCMP.
The investigation

The investigation is focused on whether voter fraud took place in the 2017 UCP leadership vote that elected now-Premier Jason Kenney.
Mount Royal University political scientist Duane Bratt says it's significant that the RCMP appears to be conducting a "pretty thorough investigation."

"The two major things is the deliberateness that the RCMP is pursuing this with and the second is the seriousness of this," he said.

"It's about whether the election was stolen. So that's as significant as you can have. You're talking about the leadership race of the current premier — that can't get any more serious."

Quote:
So far, $77,250 in fines have been levied in that investigation. The majority of the fines were for donating to the campaign with money that was not their own.

It's alleged money was funnelled into the campaign from a corporation and distributed by Callaway's former communications director, Cameron Davies.

Yup. No real evidence.

UCP moves to eliminate Alberta elections commissioner, merge offices
JANET FRENCH Updated: November 18, 2019

The United Conservative Party government has introduced legislation to eliminate the standalone elections commissioner’s office — an independent officer of the legislature that has levied tens of thousands of dollars in penalties against UCP leadership campaign donors.

If passed and granted royal assent, Bill 22, the Reform of Agencies, Boards and Commissions and Government Enterprises Act, would see current election commissioner Lorne Gibson fired and his staff transferred to the office of Alberta’s chief electoral officer.

That officer would be responsible for hiring a new elections commissioner to watch over campaign donation rules. There would be no obligation for the chief electoral officer or new commissioner to continue any investigations Gibson already has underway.

Grilled by reporters about the optics of the move in an embargoed news conference Monday, Finance Minister Travis Toews insisted that firing Gibson and combining the offices is purely for administrative efficiencies. The maneuver should save $1 million in the next five years, Toews said.

“(It’s) really again consistent with our greater effort to streamline government, to remove redundancies, to save Alberta taxpayers hard-earned tax dollars and to ensure that we have the most efficient, defensible structure,” Toews said. “We are doing nothing here that will undermine any current investigations that are taking place.”

Toews said he can’t compel the chief electoral officer to continue any current, ongoing investigations because the office is independent.

Gibson’s contract was to expire in 2023.

His office has levied more than $211,000 in fines against people and organizations involved with the campaign for Jeff Callaway, who ran for leadership of the UCP in 2017.
