I'm suprised to see Vancouver in the top 10, i've always felt the city is rather boring as far as night effects go.

They are the two best in the world. It's obvious that Hong Kong has a commanding skyline, but to say there is nothing special about the New York and Chicago skyline is insane.

The only reason why Hong Kong would be in the top three is because of the geographics. If it weren't for that, than (besides a few obvious buildings) Hong Kong's skyline would be nothing more than 'The Sorrento' copied over multiple times. Add some colorful lights, and mountians and yeah, the skyline is nice, but take that all away, and it's not the same caliber (and the lights only go so far to enhance the night skyline).

New York and Chicago are my top two because (not because that one of them is my city and they are both American) they both have that urban and architectural diversity that makes them elite cskyline cities. If you were to take away the Sears from Chicago or the ESB from Manhattan, then the skylines would still be in the top three because of that diversity. Nothing against Hong Kong, but like I said, if you take away the few 'stand out' buildings, then your just left with a dense forest of the same building over an over. Not much character to justify the skyline without the obvious buildings.

Don't take me the wrong way, and I understand you are entitled to your opinion, but I want to make it known that cities such as New York and Chicago have elite skylines, not because of their tall buildings, but because of their architectural diversity and character. Hong Kong, as beautiful as the skyline is, lacks that architectural diversity and character (not including a few buildings).

My TRUE list is as follows:
1. New York
2. Chicago
3. Hong Kong
4. Shanghi
5. Los Angeles

I don't understand what people see in L.A. I think the skyline is average at best, then consider the fact that it's the second largest city in the country and it becomes below average.

guys please this is a thread based on the best NIGHT skyline, it has nothing to do with the overall best SKYLINE, hong kong comes alive at night and the harbour sparkles like a christmas tree, neither NY or Chicago does this and i have been to both on numerous occasions, taken ferries at night, admired manhattans skyline from across the river in both brooklyn and new jersey (pre and post 9/11)

if i was picking BEST skyline overall both chicago and NY would probably be in my top 5 but i simply could not put put them in my top five night skylines of the world, no way, from the american cities i have visited (and its quite a number) both would struggle to be in my top 5 american cities as far as NIGHT skylines go, and yes this is my opinion and i don't care if nobody else agrees

It's skyline isn't very good. But at night they really light that city up.

we are just so conditioned to believe new york has a stunning skyline and people love the city so passionately (as i do) that it is hard to take a really cold dispassionate look at it.
in all, it's relatively flat and dull.
mostly fifty to sixty storey buildings row on row with two stunning (and 75 year old) exceptions.

This is such an absolutely ridiculous statement. The mountains, bay, lights, volume of buildings, etc. are all vital components to the city's night time skyline. Don't get butt-hurt just because NYC is mostly a sea of brown buildings with yellow lights.

I'd pick that so called "sea of brown buildings with yellow lights" any day of the week over any other skyline in the world. No need for the insults, they were not called for.

I don't need to be objective. It's what I like, and I think it's the best skyline in the world both day and night, and nothing is changing that. Just as you have your own feel, this is mine.

Nothing more needs to be said.

Factoring in the gorgeous mountain backdrop, height, and varied skyscrapers, it easily ranks within the top ten in North America.

And when talking about night skylines, Los Angeles is one of the most recognizable -- much more so than during the day.

From what i've seen, Auckland, New Zeleand has one the hottest night time skylines. The skytower alone is jus amazing at night. Especially for a city of its size

I'm surprised noone has mentioned Philadelphia; it's one of NA's best in this category. Montreal is also noteable since most major buildings have attractively lit crowns.
