Technically correct, though the City of Manila is only 42 sqkm in area - making it the world's most densely populated municipality. But with 22,710,000 people in 1,475 sqkm (15,397/sqkm), its urban area is still very dense as well.

Yep, some of my favourite places in China are the old neighbourhoods, particularly Shanghai's shikumen and Beijing's hutongs. A lot of them have sadly been lost, but there are efforts to preserve what is left, which is good.

Both updates for 2020. There were some adjustments on Demographia. Reminding, City Population is more a metro area list while Demographia is an urban area one.

It's the latest data for every country. City Population has the best demographics world database, updating releases from all country's statistical offices, but they don't give much details on this specific list.

Demographia, on the link I posted, has as 20-page explanation before the list.

For Canada, the 'City Population' data is likely from 2017. They seem to be using Greater Toronto - Hamilton (Toronto CMA + Hamilton CMA + Oshawa CMA) for their Toronto figure of 7,450,000. On July 1, 2018, Statistics Canada had it at 7,535,936. A year later on July 1, 2019, Statistics Canada had it at 7,680,502, an increase of +144,566.

These are the 6 largest for Canada in 2019. I've combined adjacent Census Metropolitan Areas (CMAs) and Census Agglomerations (CAs). Salaberry-de-Valleyfield CA and Okotoks CA will likely be absorbed into Montreal CMA and Calgary CMA, respectively, in the 2021 or 2026 Census. Ottawa CMA will likely absorb both Carleton Place CA and Arnprior CA. Chilliwack CA will get CMA designation so won't ever be combined with Abbotsford CMA. 2020 population estimates in brackets.

2019 Population (2020 Estimate)

Toronto: 7,680,502 (7,826,432) +1.9%
Montreal: 4,360,761 (4,426,172) +1.5%
Vancouver: 3,008,242 (3,053,366) +1.5%
Calgary: 1,545,265 (1,577,716) +2.1%
Ottawa: 1,494,246 (1,525,625) +2.1%
Edmonton: 1,447,143 (1,477,533) +2.1%

Toronto: Toronto CMA + Hamilton CMA + Oshawa CMA
Montreal: Montreal CMA + Salaberry-de-Valleyfield CA
Vancouver: Vancouver CMA + Abbotsford CMA + Chilliwack CA
Calgary: Calgary CMA + Okotoks CA
Ottawa: Ottawa CMA + Carleton Place CA + Arnprior CA
Edmonton: Edmonton CMA

City Population just released their numbers for 2021: http://citypopulation.de/en/world/agglomerations/

39 metropolitan areas above 10 million, 99 above 5 million. In Americas, 7 and 23 respectively.

When Demographia release their numbers (probably April), I'll post the lists of both sources for all cities above 2 million as I do every year.

They are using very different definitions for each country. For the US they use the most expansive CSA, but for example in Israel the use some kind Urban area criteria causing Tel aviv to show 2.7M. A similar definition to the US would mean over 4M.

and this is precisely why the lists have to be taken with a very large pinch of salt.

EG Los Angeles CSA is an area larger than the Republic of Ireland !!!
NY's more "restrictive" NY-NJ-PA metro area is an area much bigger than half the size of Belgium. The bigger CSA area is much bigger still.
Relying on national measurements wne comparing cross borders renders the exercise meaningless.

Of course you can compare transnationally. The U.S. will naturally have much larger metro boundaries, as the U.S. is, by far, the sprawliest country.

Atlanta is (geographically) much larger than Tokyo. Barcelona is (geographically) smaller than Grand Rapids. That doesn't mean that a comparison can't be made. Of course most of the fringe MSA/CSA/UA sprawl is lightly populated, so not really making much difference re. population/economic figures.

Demographia is sensible to inputs. I once e-mailed them, about some US areas, they've answered and corrected on the next edition. They also have a more careful look than CityPopulation.

Despite some problems here and there, both are very good studies, that's why I believed they worth a thread.

I went through the latest Demographia PDF and to their credit they do have a unified definition so in theory their numbers should be comparable across countries. However, checking the numbers for Israel's 4 metros, where I'm familiar with the real numbers, I'm not impressed.

Haifa (Demographia urban pop: 538K) I actually calculated this, and it seems correct.

Tel Aviv (Demographia urban pop: 2.654M): It's not necessarily completely accurate, but it isn't obviously wrong as it does include most of the 4M metro population and excludes several hundred thousand of them who live outside the main urban area.

Jerusalem (Demographia urban pop: 1.466M): This is where it goes off the rails. Demographia's own definition says that an urban area has to be part a single labour market. And yet their Jerusalem urban population is somehow higher than the Metro area by over 100K people despite the metro including places like Bet Shemesh that is 15 kilometres of forest away from Jerusalem.

Beer Sheva (Demographia urban pop: 605K): This one is ludicrous, the entire metro is only 403K and looking at a map the urban area should really just be the city itself with a population of 210K. Interestingly, they list the urban area as being just half the area of the city of Beer Sheva, causing the least dense metro in Israel become the densest, making the entire urban area to be listed as having a density higher than the city of Tel Aviv.

Older news, but China's 2020 census came out in June. Guangdong showed some insane unexpected population growth between 2010 and 2020, the majority of it likely going into the Pearl River Delta.

1990: 62,829,236
2000: 85,225,007 (+22,395,768; +35.6%)
2010: 104,303,132 (+19,078,125; 22.4%)
2020: 126,012,510 (+21,709,378; +20.8%)

Prior to the census, survey estimates had Guangdong's population at just 115 million in 2019, with the provincial government aiming to increase the region's population to 130 million by 2035.

As mentioned previously, the vast majority of this growth was concentrated in the PRD's core cities such as Guangzhou and Shenzhen. According to this report, the 9 cities that compose the PRD (AKA the "Greater Bay Area") grew to a population of 78,014,335 in 2020, accounting for 61.91% of Guangdong Province's entire population. Compared to 2010, the PRD"s share of Guangdong's total population grew by 8.04 percentage points from 53.87%, as well as numerically growing by 21,830,386 in the past decade, which outstripped the growth of the entire province.

With regards to the areas where population growth in the PRD was concentrated in:

Quote:
According to census data, the permanent residents of Guangzhou and Shenzhen are 18.677 million and 17.560 million, respectively. Guangzhou remains the most populous city in the entire Guangdong Province, while Shenzhen has added the most population in the past 10 years. The combined population increase of these two cities from 2010 was as high as 13.112 million, which exceeded the population increase of the entire Zhejiang Province during the same period, and the population increase of Zhejiang Province was second only to Guangdong in the country.

According to the previous plans of the two places, by 2020, the expected permanent population of Guangzhou and Shenzhen will be 15.5 million and 14.8 million respectively. After adjusting the data of the census, Guangzhou has exceeded the target of 3.18 million people, and Shenzhen has exceeded the target of 2.76 million people.
To conclude, the Guangdong government originally planned for a population of 84.4 million people in the PRD/GBA metropolitan area. But as the article notes, the permanent population of the nine cities in the Pearl River Delta has already exceeded 78 million, and is only about 6.4 million short of the 84.4 million expected in 2035, so it is likely that by 2035 the population of the PRD will exceed this expectation by a considerable amount if current growth trends do not rapidly change. Economist Fan Gang further predicts that by 2050, the population of the PRD, plus Hong Kong and Macao, may reach 120 to 140 million.

I prefer to work with a more modest definition of PRD, with the 6 largest prefectures: Shenzhen, Dongguan, Guangzhou, Suzhou, Zhongshan, Zhuhai.

Still, it's 63 million people living in a 19,300 km² area. For comparison, that's the same area of New York and Bridgeport MSAs put together, where 21 million people live, exactly 1/3 of PRD.

And population, as you mentioned, came above estimates.

I'm under the impression that the Chinese population estimates are quite a bit lower than reality, especially in the mega-cities (10 million +). I think Guangdong, for instance, very well could already have reached 130 million people. I lived in Nanjing for several years and in Yunnan for many more and traveled fairly extensively for work. I'm always amazed by the population density in these cities. I also love the inter-connectivity with HSR and metros/buses throughout many of them. That type of density isn't for everyone, but I enjoyed my time there.
