My Top 5 is:
1. Barcelona
2. Rome
3. Budapest
4. Venice/Venezia
5. Florence/Firenze
I don't like major urban areas such as London, Madrid or Paris, they are very unfriendly for tourists. A favaourite city must have a great historical background, I can see here on this thread people who name as favourite cities their native cities, that is a big mistake!

1. Paris--all of Europe in one city...never had a bad time there, and the food is amazing.
2. Budapest--simply beautiful and attractive, nice people. I definately knew I was on vacation there, it seemed exotic yet familiar.
3. Antwerp--underrated, wonderful city on the Schelde. Again, great people and atmosphere. Have many good memories of times there.

Europe has so many wonderful cities that it was hard to make a choice. Really like Italian cities as well--bella Italia! Guess your own experience in that city will determine if it remains your favorite. No matter how lovely a city is, if you had a lousy time, that's what you'll remember.

Paris is far to be the most romantic city in Europe.

Peanuthead has a poiunt about Edinburgh. Great city.

Cambridge is beautiful and elegant and a wonderful university city.

Paris is Paris. 10 out of 10 and unmissable.

So Big city Paris, medium city Edinburgh and small city Cambridge.
