Absolutely wonderful photographs.

The first grand train station I ever experienced in person
was Frankfurt's Hauptbahnhof....so I especially like the first aerial
of the station.

I'm curious, how did such a massive structure
(with it's triple arched train shed) escape from
being destroyed in WW2 bombing raids?

Do you have any interior photographs of the Hauptbahnhof?

Fantastic collection of images.
I especially like the Schumann Theatre. Does it still exist?

Great find. I wonder how many of those buildings still stand.

Thanks

ethereal reality - you're right, Hauptbahnhof got away lightly during WWII. AFAIK, only windows and tracks were damaged. The area around Hauptbahnhof was actually one of the less damaged parts of central Frankfurt.

realm0845, the back part of the building, including the auditorium, was destroyed by bombs in 1944. The front part, which housed several restaurants, remained intact and was initially used by the US Army before it was taken down in 1960 and replaced with a non-descript office building.

With the exception of the Nazi subdivisions, every photo looks better than the city does today.

That can't be good.

incredible pics

I'm pretty sure I recall seeing the little building as shown here in the foreground still standing. As for the rest behind it, my have things changed.

Zeil then:

and now:

*edit* yep, Google maps confirms the cottage like building still stands.

A copy was rebuilt after the war but it is in a slightly different location from what I understand.

It's a cafe, but if you are in Frankfurt, don't visit it. The service is terrible and the food terribly average. As you can imagine, it's a tourist trap.

One of the greatest urban losses ever in Europe. I'm all glad that Frankfurt today is the European skyline heaven as it is, but still, it's sad that the old glory is gone.
