I second that! Completely different and so much has been built since 2001. The south loop, west loop, downtown, streeterville, river north and river west have seen and are still seeing many developments.

It's exciting to see others local and non-local so excited about what's happening here.

Maybe some kind of maintenance access?

Smile Current weather

Do they ever report what the temp and Windchill is up at the top where they are working? If it was 60 below wind chill at the ground it would be something to know what it was up at the enclosure.

There is little wind chill in the enclosure because it is enclosed.

Stick to actual temperatures.

This is clearly a troll post. Its a shame that your envy of Chicago is so strong that you created a new account just to make your first post, a troll post. Temperatures never reached 60 below. As Harry said -- stick to actual facts.

^^^Well that's certainly a warm welcome. Its the coldest week in 20 years, I can't see it as trolling to ask about the windchill at the top of a supertall under construction. We have forumers with blatant intolerance in red caps as their signature so give the guy a break.

Welcome, Captainnemo and styx.

First time in Chicago since last May/June. Coming into downtown from ohare on the expressway.. this thing is just there. So prominent and big. Love it. Staying at the same hotel and have a good view of it.

Oh how I miss Chicago. Downtown just keeps getting better especially.

Shock and Awe!

Vista and the frozen landscape. Frozen vista for miles.

Enlarge screen. I found lower res ones but they don't do justice. Might make for some nice wallpaper during the winter months.

Wow that shot is ridiculous! Aon and Hancock wear the winter so well. They almost look they were built for cold weather pictures

In the case of all of Chicago's black Miesian towers they literally were designed to look good in cold weather. The color black during the early Modernist period was popular because it hid the industrial grime that so blighted older stone and terra cotta towers (mainly coal soot) and also because it contrasted grey dreary skies and snow so well. The idea was to make the tower pop against a backdrop of clouds.

It looks like there are two holes, because its two floors in height, these are potential elevator stops just like every other level has, except they will be seldom used for maintenance only. I assume they will have to be covered up with a weatherproof door to not allow wind into the elevator shafts.
I know this will never happen, but if the blow through area could be enclosed with something like, say, chain link fencing, it would still retain its purpose, being transparent to the wind. An elevator stop here could allow a very basic but amazing outdoor observation area. Not for the public, but maybe an amenity for residents, or even hotel guests? And yeah chain link would look like shit, but something custom and awesome akin to fancy prison bars would do the trick. The elevator could simply refuse to stop there unless weather conditions are calm, and special permission was granted.
Again, its not going to happen, but that sure would be an amazing space.

Stunning photo! Without Vista this photo wouldn't be as good, and right now Vista is mostly just a skeleton! I look forward to seeing the same shot next winter, with Vista in its full glory.

Hopefully that Tribune Expansion Tower happens. It'll do wonders for the skyline if they retain the 1,400+ ft range. On a side note, I always liked the Aon tower. Fits in perfectly.

I like this idea. Perhaps the fencing doesn't need to go all the way to the top.
A 4 foot fence would work and your view would be unobstructed.
