Build an IKEA in the IMD next to Costco and call it a day. It's not like Chicago lacks the land and IKEA can be given the boot when their lease is up in 30 years if we do have a land shortage again in the future.

Not so easy. The drive to Costco at many times of the day - both weekdays and weekends - is already a horror. Add the traffic from an IKEA and you'd be talking true gridlock on the existing streets.

I have never encountered anything close to "gridlock" in the IMD.

Sunrise meet-up at 360 Chicago

Hey everyone. I 'm a photo ambassador for 360 Chicago (Hancock's observatory) so I help them plan and host various photography focused events throughout the year.

On Friday, December 21st, the winter solstice, we're hosting our third annual sunrise solstice meet-up. While 'photo' is plastered all over the invite, it's open to everyone. I figured a bunch of skyscraper enthusiasts might enjoy the opportunity to watch the sun rise from 1000' over the city just as much as photographers. And if you're a photographer AND skyscraper geek, I mean....

Here's the link to sign-up > https://www.eventbrite.com/myevent?eid=53162464362

The $11 ticket gets you in as early as 6:00am, and you get up-and-down privileges so you can come back for sunset.

I'll be there, so I hope I can finally meet a few of you in person.

Here are a few sunrise shots from the past two events:

Read more carefully. ADDING an IKEA would lead to it - future tense.

Thought this was a pretty interesting article. At least Chicago isn't alone in creating a lot of bland buildings lately.

“I don’t think you can call the designers of these buildings designers or architects,” he told Curbed. “I think accountants are designing these buildings.”

I spend a lot of time in places like Denver, Milwaukee, Des Moines, and Minneapolis. You can rest assured that most of the stuff we think is bland here is actually above average design compared to what it could be. Some of the apartment blocks they build in Denver are downright heinous, like horizontal Grand Plazas all over the place...

Four Seasons, one of the largest buildings there, has an uncanny resemblance to the lovechild of Grand Plaza and AMLI River North:

Agreed. I was thinking more in terms of the mid rise stuff going up around the city and neighborhoods. Milwaukee has a lot of building going on but it looks like they have one person designing everything. Charlotte is another with a ton of building going on with really bad/bland cookie cutter design.

Most new Milwaukee stuff looks pretty damn good IMO.

The Milwaukee boom is producing a lot of very high quality Urban planning, but the architectural motifs are really getting old.

Some Architects forget that the underside of balconies are actually facades. This building might look OK in elevation, but looks like a parking deck from the ground.

There will be a meeting with the developer of The 78 on December 17th at 6pm at Daystar regarding the plan to open a red line station on 15th/Clark. Please mark your calendar and bring your questions.

Based upon the comments under this post, the mass majority of neighbors think this will be armageddon for sure, starting with the killing of all children within a mile radius and then proceeding to decimate all property values...

How does amazing access to mass transit destroy property values?

I'd recommend reading the comments --- yes, there's several foolish reactionaries but many are positive and trying to determine the specifics of where the station will actually be located not whether or not the bogeymen will take the train to kill their children and pets.

I have no issues at all - using Chrome - getting (targeted) Google adds in the banner, but no pop-ups. Malware ?

It happens on your phone. Redirects to an entirely different website. It comes and goes too, some days I can barely access the forum, others it's totally fine. It's not malware because I just got a brand new phone and it does the exact same thing.
