National Basketball League of Canada

Here is the new thread for the new season 2019-2020. I was going to post it a little closer to the season start but I see that some people are calling for it now.

Also here is a link to last season's thread:

Just bumping this ahead of the 2018/19 NBLC thread. This should now be the active thread rather than the former one.

Magic off to a 2-0 start continuing where they left off last season. They suffered a big loss with Trey Kell but added Maurice Jones Sr who's a small point guard & fun to watch.

Even without Kell they looked poised for another run as most off the team is back. Home opener had an incredible atmosphere tonight and while attendance hasn't been posted I'd guess over 3000 fans including about 20 guys dressed as Santa who must have been doing a pubcrawl

The Raptors success may be the best thing to happen to this league as more and more interest grows in basketball. Just need to add a couple more stable franchises to get back up to 10 teams. Sudbury is a nice success story who is seeing an increase in season ticket sales this season.

Over 3,000 in the seats is a great start to the season. Let's hope it continues.

Pretty cool to see a combined 10,000 fans through the doors in less than 24 hours for the Magic & Wildcats.

Some encouraging attendance numbers coming out of the NBL so far from the home openers. I'd imagine the Raptors effect here is huge. St Johns has yet to play their home opener which I'm sure will be a big number as well.

1 London Lightning 6,225 6,225 6,225 6,225 +104.8%

Initial reports were that Moncton's season opener was over 3,000, but apparently it was 2,389. Still a great number, and hopefully it will continue.

The franchise is only on a one-year hiatus IIRC.

Weird that some of the those numbers are way off from what the NBL website is posting as of today.

Regular Season average

Moncton: 1739 (6 games)
St-John's: 2465 (5 games)
Island: 1012 (7 games)
Halifax: 2285 (5 games) (missing 2 games)
London: 1674 (1 game) (for some reason, the other 6 games dont have official stats)
Sudbury: 2598 (4 games)
Windsor: 1702 (6 games)
KW: 1672 (7 games)

Good to see every teams over the 1k average. I remember making this exercises back in December 2018

Quote:
Moncton: 1180 (3 games, no attendance stat for 1 game)
St-John's: 4903 (2 games)
Island: 1306 (4 games)
Halifax: 1995 (3 games, no attendance stat for 1 game)
London: 2757 (4 games)
Sudbury: 2089 (4 games)
Windsor: 1125 (3 games)
Kitchener: 776 (2 games)

Saint John: 1241 (3 games)
Cap Breton: 820 (3 games)

I see that the CEBL has negotiated a broadcast agreement with the CBC for some of their games. It's too bad the NBLC weren't able to do this.

I'd made that post back in January

The numbers from the NBL Wiki are now

Pos Team Total High Low Average Change
1 London Lightning 19,431 6,225 1,524 2,776 −8.7%
2 Sudbury Five 10,395 3,027 2,266 2,599 26.90%
3 St. John's Edge 12,329 3,274 1,781 2,466 −35.0%
4 Halifax Hurricanes 13,909 4,249 1,123 1,987 −5.2%
5 Moncton Magic 10,434 2,389 1,330 1,739 51.00%
6 Windsor Express 10,214 3,442 919 1,702 47.60%
7 KW Titans 11,704 3,766 938 1,672 28.50%
8 Island Storm 7,899 1,410 810 987 −19.4%
League total 96,315 6,225 810 1,926 3.40%

The Island Storm seem to be the team in peril right now..they've had very little success since entering the league and its likely showing because of it.

Billy White dropped a franchise record 52 points on the Hurricanes today in front of 2300+ .

Crazy to think he was nearly traded away.

It was a great atmosphere. Magic are now 15-4 on the year.

Could be a very busy April & May at the Avenir Centre what with NBLC & QMJHL playoffs going on concurrently.

Its a short playoff this year, with only 4 teams (top 2 in each division) making it. I'd imagine we'll end up with some funny spacing between some of the NBL games. They don't need to worry about finishing before the Memorial Cup starts

I believe that happened last year as well. The biggest loss for the Magic might be losing on some weekend dates since The Wildcats will get priority. Part of me wishes they'd try a day/night double header with the Magic & Wildcats but the 2 franchises really don't acknowledge each other so I cant see it. I know Harbour Station had pulled it off in the past..but theres also ice conditions to worry about.

Moncton Magic are out

https://monctonmagic.ca/blogs/latest...epart-the-nblc

Team states it will explore its future options (IE, I assume, beg the CEBL to take them)

With the loss of the Moncton and St. John's teams, the NBLC is now in dire straits. Will the league even survive?

I have no idea what the future of the Magic will be. The obvious choice would be for the team to jump to the CEBL, but is the CEBL even interested in establishing an east coast presence?

If the teams in Halifax and PEI (and the St. John's team) could be convinced to defect, then the CEBL could have an automatic Atlantic Division in their league, which would be good for reducing travel costs. The CEBL right now is based in Ontario and western Canada therefore travel costs could be prohibitive for a solitary Moncton team based on the east coast.

Unless something like this were to happen, I fear the Moncton Magic franchise will just fold completely.
