Just a shot in the dark here.

I think the Bird/Terra Project would include complete demolition of the old Moncton High School building, and construction of just another generic mixed Commercial/Office/Residential building to replace it.

I even that

So, the report on moving the library to MH35 is out.

Results:

- would it fit?
yes, but the space would not be ideal (not as amenable for programming needs as the current library, and no loading bay)

- how much would it cost?
$4.6M - $3.45M for construction & overhead, $435k for engineering & design work, $776k as a contingency fund.

The library board chairperson not surprisingly has quickly come out stating that the move is not practical and that she does not support it.

This is important information to help make a decision. Now, all we need is to have a thorough vetting of the Bird/Terra proposal so that we can determine what is best for the city and the old MHS site. That is of course if Bird/Terra ever intends to release their proposal for public scrutiny............

I don't think Bird/Terra will release there plans to the public ti'll after they have been approved, and permits issued. That is what it seems like they are trying to do anyway.

As for the library I had pointed out the awkward area, and lack of accessibility for people who actually use it. Since it seems the people fighting for the move don't actually go, and just want it to move so the Schools stays public space (at least a portion of it). Add the price, and it just further proves it. That it should not have been made an option in the first place. + the fact staff (The library board chairperson in particular) Seems to have been against the move from the start.

On CBC radio this morning, it was intimated that details regarding the Bird/Terra proposal will be released by the end of April.

It would be nice if the two proponents could somehow work together. I really like MH35 in their passion to preserve the auditorium and gymnasium sections as a performing arts centre. The rest of the school I'm not quite so concerned with, and if Bird/Terra had some interesting ideas for that part of the building, I would be all ears..........

Would the MHS not be a good fit for the new RCMP station?

The Mounties really want the new police station to be built next to the courthouse. I envisage it being built on the site of the old provincial jail downtown.

Didn't the owners put some $$$ into some renos/beautification in hopes of it increasing the likelihood of a sale? I don't remember it actually selling though.

Very interesting discussion on CBC this morning about the replacement project for the Codiac RCMP headquarters.

The discussion revolved mostly about the cost (about $45M), and the size of the project, but at the end of the interview the two city councilors involved, were asked an interesting question about the location of the new building.

Johnna Brewer noted that one of the three selected proponents for the RCMP project was Bird/Terra. She said she couldn't help but wonder whether there was any connection between this and Bird/Terra's last minute proposal for the MHS site.

Both councilors said they couldn't comment because of confidentiality (although I don't think they would have gotten in trouble simply for issuing a denial); but then one of the councilors made an unsolicited (and unnecessary) comment that it was important that the new RCMP building be located somewhere where they would be able to respond quickly to calls originating in any area of the city. He didn't need to say this, and he wasn't directly asked this, but this could have been an unsolicited and oblique reference to the MHS site, since it is located within spitting distance of the Botsford/Wheeler intersection, and there is no question that police cruisers could fan out much more quickly from the MHS site than they would from Assumption Blvd.........

Hmmmmmm........

Maybe this is the real reason why Bird/Terra has been so mum on their proposal for MHS - it's because they're trying to tie it in with the RFP for the new RCMP HQ and they really couldn't say anything.........

Interesting times..........

So if this is correct, council's options to save MHS is either to have the library removed from downtown, or the RCMP headquarters removed from downtown.

I do agree with the sentiment but at the same time if the new P.S. is at the old MHS as MonctonRad
has said they could respond faster being in that area rather then on Assomption Blvd. Specially with all the work that the city is planing in the Assomption Blvd area. If they do all that work, and move the cop shop down there it may cause response times to slow because of massive grid lock.

As much as that is a good idea, I would much prefer the headquarters to be built next to the courthouse and I'm sure the same is true for the RCMP. As much as that is still considered downtown, it is still out of the way and would be another lost chance for new and beautiful development downtown. Most cruisers are already on patrol so they tend to have easy access to all neighborhoods anyway. It really wouldn't make any difference in their response time because they are not like the Fire department.

As for that councillor, no thanks, if you take the rcmp away from downtown, you are saying good bye to a lot of foot traffic and the feeling of safety, knowing the main Headquarters is right there makes Main Street feel safer. I just don't see the point in doing that.. Move Moncton High to the woods, move the rcmp near the highway away from downtown.. casino out in magnetic hill.. what's next moving assumption building to elmwood?

The |MHS area is almost all residential (except directly behind it.) Who wants to live next door to a cop shop? Not I!

Plus if they put a police station there, say goodbye to that building. It will have to go entirely, or almost so, in order to put the cop shop there. No one wants that whether they care about a library being moved there or not.
Putting a police station there is a terrible idea.

Moncton councillor wants city to withdraw support for Moncton High proposal
Approval of sale of former Moncton High School property rests with provincial government

A Moncton city councillor said he's worried about a lack of information from one of two proponents interested in developing the former Moncton High School property, and wants city council to withdraw its support for the Terra Trust and Bird Construction project.

"By the end of April … 2017, (Terra Trust and Bird) was to present financials as well as make public presentations," said Coun. Shawn Crossman.

"The public has been inquiring, as you know, on this proposal and nothing has come out forward to the public."

At Monday night's city council meeting, Crossman read a notice of motion, hoping to get unanimous support to add the matter to the agenda.

Terra Trust and Bird Construction submitted the proposal to council in January and council did not reveal any details, saying was up to the authors to decide when to let the public know what they had in mind

I find it very odd that there's still no information on the Bird proposal. Do council know any of the details and are not allowed to divulge or are they in the dark like the rest of us?

One could assume that they (Bird) intend on demolishing the better part of the old school...

City council has been briefed on the Bird/Terra proposal, but this was in camera and they are not at liberty to discuss the details of the proposal publically.

I strongly suspect the Bird/Terra proposal involves wholesale demolition of MHS, probably with preservation of the façade. I also suspect that the proposal might include using the property for the new Codiac RCMP headquarters. Finally, I suspect that Bird/Terra has no plans to preserve the auditorium and gymnasium.

If I am right, this is definitely an inferior proposal to the MH35 one.........

Interesting discussion with Councilor Shawn Crossman on CBC Radio this morning.

Apparently Bird/Terra no longer plans to give any public information about their proposal until they are revealed as the winning proponent!!!! (talk about buying a pig in a poke).

According to Crossman, there continues to be no guarantee by Bird/Terra regarding the structural integrity of the building, or continued support for the auditorium or the Gymnasium.

This is an outrage, especially given the open and transparent nature of the competing MH35 proposal. There is no opportunity here for public discussion or engagement regarding the merits of these two competing proposals simply because we have no idea what the second proposal is!!!

The conspiratory theorist in me leads me to suspect that the Bird/Terra proposal must be the inferior one of the two, but that since it might entail no expense to the provincial purse, will actually win out. The lack of details on the Bird/Terra proposal is therefore just a political ploy to prevent public opposition from developing until it is too late to do anything about it.......

Outrageous indeed! Now we can only put our trust in our elected officials. I have confidence in our city council, but I'm wondering about provincial officials. I have a feeling that they want to get rid of the property asap and with as little cost as possible. If so, will they force a decision on the city?
