My guess is the park element isn't defined here because it's up for its own Open House late in the week and next week.

Yeah, there are also pathways among the skylights, but I expect fences and gates to prevent people from trampling the greenery.

Oakridge Centre, designated as a new town centre for Vancouver, sits on 30 acres of land and is easily accessible by the SkyTrain. WESTBANK CORP

It may be made of concrete and steel, but flexibility is the key for the redevelopment of Vancouver’s Oakridge Centre. With fast-changing retail, social and technological trends, it’s a must.

“The project is literally evolving every day,” even as new roads and infrastructure are being built and the first phase of the ambitious multiyear, mixed-use project is due to begin in the new year, says Ian Gillespie, founder and president of real-estate developer Westbank Corp.

But that’s necessary. “How much of what we know has changed since we first started talking about this project 10 years ago? And how much is going to change in the next seven years it will take to complete the project? The answer is: everything.”

It’s an approach too few developers are taking in rethinking aging retail complexes anywhere, he says. The Oakridge redevelopment started with a plan by previous owner Ivanhoé Cambridge Inc. to add 10 residential and office towers and parkland around the 30-acre Oakridge Centre, which is near the SkyTrain station at Cambie Street and 41st Avenue.

Like most malls built in the 1950s, it’s surrounded by parking lots. Mr. Gillespie pressed for a new vision in 2017 when Westbank partnered with QuadReal Property Group, which purchased Ivanhoé Cambridge’s stake in 2017.

“This has been designated by the city as a new town centre for Vancouver,” Mr. Gillespie says. “Where are you going to find 30 acres of consolidated ownership of land on the Canada Line again? It deserves a lot of thought.”

That’s led to a vision of a mixed-use community designed to evolve with the times. For instance, the plans envision a million square feet of retail spaces that can easily be reconfigured in size, depending on tenants’ needs. There will be an open-air high street, which the mall does not currently have, and there will be indoor retail zones that face onto parkland that’s replacing parking lots.

It was sunset on the Oakridge Safeway store today, closing it's doors for the last time. Also, as you go in the entrance to the mall from the corner of 41st and Cambie, the first section of mall stores are all shuttered now.

I remember when it was Woodwards Food Floor. Why did that section close all the stores?

I'm not sure of the phasing but that first section of stores was all open and extremely busy just before Christmas.

They have been working on a new entrance to the mall in the area of the former GAP/Aritzia since literal the day GAP closed at Oakridge. At night if you walk by you can see its close to complete[Thru the glass facade]. I believe this will serve as the main entrance to the mall during the construction of phase 1.

Jan 23, 6pm-9pm....Westbank is hosting their Chinese New Year event at Oakridge. I went last year. It was really good for a fee event. They opened the entire food court for complimentary food. Had some good entertainment too. It felt like all of Richmond attended, so it was a bit crowded.

Just realized these aren't in the database or diagrams for Vancouver.

I will say, if nothing else Westbank can put on a hell of a nice mall exposition. Last night's exhibition was really quite excellent. Crowds packed the mall as much as the capacity can handle and the performances were actually pretty good.

Room In Order has opened in their new location in the east wing according to their instagram. They used to be in that corridor where all the shops were closed up.

$2 million for a 647 sq/ft one bedroom? Chinese billionaires must be dumber than we thought:

If not for these people, Vancouver will never ever get nicer things. Who's going to pay for them? You? Better be them paying than to be forever stuck with "Vancouver Specials" and boxy walk-ups in this city.

Without this type of pricing for the units, there is no way architectural flairs can be achieved in tall buildings. Someone has to pay for them. People are paying for the novelty of owning something that stands out, and if they can afford it, let them. If you are envious, then work harder so that one day you can afford them too.

It really puzzles me how you become a billionaire in the first place when you then make idiot "investments" like this. That wealth won't last a generation.

It's also that the extra price ain't going to buy you anything better than on a regular condo. Building quality was only marginally better in Trump Tower when we lived there and still they had pipes burst. Same crap, just for double the price...
