Toronto stands at 19 homicides, compared to 27 at this time last year, which turned out to be a record-high year for murders.

^ Yep, although last year at this time the van attack and its 10 victims had already occurred.

Good point, but were they included in that total of 27? Technically they must have been, however this has been a fairly slow>average year for murders thus far, especially April, which saw only 3 homicides. I can't see last year's out-of-whack total being matched.

Virtually the same as Stockholm, Sweden and about the same population in the greater Stockholm-area (2.3 mil).

Were somewhere between 18 and 22 i believe. However official numbers are not presented until a few months into the new year.

The official numbers for 2017 was 28 and 2016 it was 50, which was a record year i believe.

It would be very interesting to see numbers from other European cities, as its hard to find.

^Surprising. I would have expected most European cities to have lower rates.

I believe its rate per capita is on par with lots of other western european capitals such as Amsterdam, Berlin, Paris and Rome.
However rates for cities like Oslo, Madrid, Copenhagen has been lower in a 10 year period.

The parts of Europe with the highest numbers yearly usually lie between 3 to 6 per 100.000. Those cities are Usually Southern Italy such as Naples, or Marseille and Corsica in France. Also Glasgow, Belfast. Malmö and Manchester has had a problem with murders.

Amsterdam had high rates in the late 90s but its decreasing.

Eastern european cities tend to have higher rates, though.

Sweden has the highest rate of murders with a firearn in western europe (0.32) just under Portugal. I believe Canada has a rate of 0.60 something?

I don't think any of those places have murder rates above 3/100,000 and certainly not up to 6/100,000.

Its relatively small cities so it doesnt take that much to get the numbers up.

Statistics is hard to come by, but:

Marseille, France had 34 murders in 2016 which is a rate of 3,9.

The island of Corsica had 17 murders in 2013 which would give it a rate of approx 5.5 .

Malmö, Sweden has the past 7 years or so had a steady number of between 9-13 murder per year which would give it a rate of between 3.1 - 4.1.

Manchester had 33 killings in 2015 which gives it a rate of 6.6. In 2017 it had a rate of 2.8 appearantly and 2018 4.0

Murder rates are probably decreasing in Belfast and Glasgow just like it has in southern italy.

However in a 10 year-span i would estimate Naples rate to be atleast over 3.0. Most likely well below the numbers from early 2000s and 1990s when crime was out of control in parts of Calabria, campania and sicily.

Is it usually the opposite? St Louis only has a population of 315,000 and KC is close to 500,000 so it would make sense that the numbers would be higher. Both cities have major crime issues.

What's the source for those figures? The Manchester numbers look very high for the city itself, are you sure they are not for Greater Manchester (population 2.8m), or including attempted homicides etc?

The numbers for Manchester could be for Greater Manchester. I can not find the source now unfortunately, but it sounds legit that its greater manchester which would give it a lower rate of course.

The source for Malmö:
2016: 11 (3.4)
https://www.hd.se/2017-02-20/rekord-...rligt-ar-malmo

15 murders in 14 months: https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.svt...almo-pa-ett-ar

2018: found from various articles. However already in june there was 8 recorded murders (5 more were noted the following months)
https://samnytt.se/efter-torsdagens-...t-forra-arets/

This lists all the shootings in the city, but updates stopped in september and only includes gun-violence. 9 killings with firearns were recorded in this list: https://www.expressen.se/kvallsposte...mo-under-2018/

Naples 2015 & 2016: https://corrieredelmezzogiorno.corri...85e84117.shtml

Naples 2017 & 2018: https://www.google.com/amp/s/corrier...d03ab_amp.html

Marseille: https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.the...-future-france

Corsica:
https://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-21473100 this article clsims theres 20-25 murders per year

Attention!! These murder rates are 100% wrong. The murders are in the Metropolitan Area of Naples (over 3 million of inhabitants), not in the city of Naples (960,000 inhabitants). I realize the Gomorra effect, but.............

Thanks for clearing it up. Im not fluent in Italian.

Do you know how many of these murders occured in the actual city?

21 murders in a city of 3 mil (and a region somewhat known for crime) would be a rate of 0.7 which is one of the lowest in all of europe and lower than the average in italy. Are you sure its correct?

This screenshot suggests that the average yearly rate between 2012-2016 is 3.23:
