Notice that the Marriott Library main building is actually an International style architecture, but I think the brutalism at the base makes a great compliment to it, and looks good on its own. Also, notice the infamous brutalist tower structure behind it, which I think needs a bit of modernization... it is a bit too much brutalism. And notice the amount of exposed concrete that you can see on the opposite wall that is reflected in the glass windows in the last photo.

I've always thought the ground level looked awesome and reminds me of the entry to the rebel base on the planet Hoth in "Empire Strikes Back".

Hoth base:

Marriott Library Ground Level Entrance

Concrete Stair System which wraps around the perimeter of the building

That stair system does look great - a lot of brutalist work was meant to be organic, in a craggy, cliff like sort of way. It didn't always work, but combined with sympathetic landscaping it can come off really well.

I heard about this one recently, actually. Watched a programme about revitalizing buildings and transforming carbon footprints, and this came up as part of the retrofit-accommodation plan. You can't find the show in a youtube link, otherwise i'd post it. All the government office buildings are supposed to be renovated under the accommodation plan. That building is supposed to be the largest example of that. Show anything about what's going on in that area?

Oakville has really nice mansions but most of their highrises are brutalism.

The British have really produced some of the best Brutalist stuff. the Brunswick Centre really looks like one one of the style's finest products.

The city center of the Parisian suburb Ivry-sur-Seine was nearly entirely rebuilt at the hands of architect Jean Renaudie. All photos taken by me in 2009

How can anybody not like brutalism? It's so damn playful and fun! It looks best with plants growing on it and flowing down the sides over raw concrete.

I like brutalism's affinity for defying gravity, myself.

Gawd that Saarinen is so beautiful. Wowza.

I'm not a fan of the Prentice building myself. Not that I think it should be demolished...

It's worth noting that the Saarinen is not just on a random hill somewhere but on a hill on a point overlooking Lake Michigan and the Milwaukee lakefront...
