Some discussion reg: this proposed development in the Assiniboine Park thread. It is a major addition to the Park and City, Hence a thread that may be of interest to some.

The 2017 provincial budget has no dollars attached for the $75-million Diversity Gardens...

The Conservancy and the WAG received financial commitments from the previous NDP government, but the Progressive Conservative government said several months ago those plans were being reviewed and a decision would be coming in the near future

The following road closures come into effect on Monday, May 8.

Locomotive Drive closed to vehicle traffic east of Conservatory overflow parking lot.
Both eastbound turn-offs from Conservatory Drive onto Locomotive Drive become two-way loop with no through traffic.
Formal Garden Way closed to vehicle traffic.
Southeast corner entrance closed (Roblin Blvd. and Park Blvd.)
Southbound turn-off from Assiniboine Park Drive onto Locomotive Drive closed to vehicle traffic.

All the site services and foundation tenders have closed. They will need a specialist for the exterior facade EFTE (Ethylene tetrafluoroethylene) cable structure. <----that's a mouthful.

The building has quite a large footprint. Piling is coming along nicely.

The name and idea are corny as hell but it looks like it will be quite spectacular. Smacks of hollow symbolism but the indigenous segment is the only bit of indigenous place-making I know of that is in a rich part of the city, which I think is pretty neat.

Really. Because everywhere I look rivers and lakes and parks and even the city itself are named in one of the many aboriginal languages.
Amd let's not forget when the Feds are done jerking each other off. The Kapyong barricks will be native lands. Right in the middle of tuxedo.

It's something anyways, perhaps some step in the right direction. And I suspect things will never be "square", they never are generally.

I find there's a ton of hypocrisy surrounding the Assiniboine Park upgrades. If the City did nothing, people would be slamming them. Now they're doing something, and people are slamming them. So what is it?

Classic Winnipegger response. Damned if we do, damned if we don't. Personally, since people will bitch anyway, I say we just build everything then let people realize how nice it is down the road, like everything that gets built here.

Pretty much every "controversial" major project here has had the general opinion change on it pretty soon after opening. With the major exceptions being IGF and the new PSB, but that's largely due to ineptitude and corruption.

I wonder if there's anyone left that thinks negatively of Esplanade Riel. It's by far the most iconic piece of infrastructure in the city, and recognizable as Winnipeg immediately, all over the country. And it's very functional.

In my opinion, this new conservatory will be one of the highlights of the city. Perhaps not for the 18-20 year old crowd coming north from Grand Forks. But for a large percentage of adults, this will be a huge hit. The fact that it is nestled into one of the finest in-city gems in North America just makes it that much better. This project is wildly underrated. I cannot speak for every visitor, but in my family and friend group, this would be every bit as important of a must-see as the CMHR when coming to town.

I mean, the Muttart Conservatory is a huge draw in Edmonton and this complex seems to make the Muttart look humble in comparison.

Let's not forget that the original Town of Tuxedo <> City of Winnipeg line was Edgeland, not Kenaston Blvd.

So the Kapyong Barracks is actually original CoW.

Polo is in St. James. Assiniboine Park to me is Tuxedo.

Inner Beltway I think is better on Kenaston than Moray..

That kind of thang.
