The WAG will be getting some glass next to the Memorial entrance, this will be the new gift shop.

sounds like the new focus for the gallery is on selling things...

Why would it be a focus?

holy shit, seriously?! They are cutting windows into the façade of the original building? That's sacrilege. We have all this heritage protection for random shit, but one of the landmark Modernist buildings in the entire country can just be defaced?!

apparently its not just windows. They are moving the wall forward to get rid of the space under the cantilever. That is f*cking unbelievable. I thought the WAG appreciated design.

It's always been part of the plan and reconfiguration with the new IAC.

corporatization of a public service. they've already got rid of most of their educational/information aspects, esp to the arts community. it's a store to show and sell art now.

It’s been featured in most of the renders over the last couple of years, I’m surprised no one has noticed the windows until now lol. I don’t think it’s that bad... it’ll let light into the building and people will be able to see what’s in the shop.

The NAC in Ottawa was supposed to be a classic too, but the fact is it’s been improved vastly by the addition of glass.

Don't worry, adding windows will get rid of a blank, barren wall along the street edge. It will help get eyes on the street and animate that public space along Memorial. A very welcome urban touch I think.

desecration of a masterpiece. That subtle angle in stone was the entire parti of the building. I’m in shock the art gallery of all people would do that.

Cutting open the wall of the art gallery to expose the gift shop is like painting over a Monet because you want the colours to be more vibrant.

Based on the two renders above it doesn't look like they're getting rid of the cantilever or moving the wall at all, just replacing some of the stone that's there now with glass
