Hopefully the new lanes will alleviate/address that issue.

I doubt it; expansion always seems to encourage more people to drive.

I read somewhere traffic volumes on that stretch have not gone up significantly over the last 10 years, whereas most other areas of the city have seen an increase. That shows people are either avoiding Kenaston or travelling at non-peak times and that once the widening happens, there will be in increase in volume.

The only thing that I can see helping move traffic faster would be intersection improvements that lead to shorter lights for non-Kenaston traffic at corydon and grant (more turning and through lanes).

Also if the speed is 70 then people might stop driving at 45 km/h near carpathia in fear of that speed trap lol

You can't paint all reserves with the same brush because they are not all the same. The success models of BC reserves are a far cry from what happens on the prairies~!

It could also be that for most of the day that stretch of route 90 is near 100% capacity. If you cannot force more volume through a roadway it is hard for volume to increase, just saying.

I'll wager it'll be easier for non-indigenous owned businesses to set up shop on an urban reserve than for card carrying indigenous people. Less red tape. Better rates.

And that therein underlines the absurdity and just how outdated the 1867 Indian Act really is!

Casino and gas station? Come on! Maybe some residential or office space instead? We don't need a stupid casino to suck the money out of the people most susceptible to losing what little they have in the first place.

...I can't imagine the Kapyong site, which is about the size of downtown Winnipeg, to be one giant casino and gas bar. There will certainly be residential, office, probably some retail (although not much given the saturation both north and south of the site). If there is a casino, it probably won't be any bigger than Regent or McPhillips, which according to a very rough google maps guestimate, each take up a 200m x 200m area.

200m x 200m is roughly 10 acres. If they do build a casino of the same caliber and of the same suburban sprawl parking, that is 10 acres of the total 158 acres of land for the site.

^ I think residential and retail is pretty much a certainty.

I don't usually go off on flights of fantasy, but with a site this size, we should be looking forward to a design competition akin to the U of M Northlands golf course redevelopment. There's no real reason the FN's shouldn't be held to the same standards. We can demand low to mid rise (maybe even a few highrise) multi family units with street level retail and little/no setbacks along Grant and Corydon. The Casino could be at Taylor.

The province would have give them a license for a casino, and has steadfastly refused to agree to one in Winnipeg.

Dan Lett weighs in on Kapyong in the FP. While the objective is good, it looks like there are going to be a lot of roadblocks along the way.

I'm curious which portions are going to FNs and which is the part Canada Lands is developing. Also why the crown couldn't negotiate giving some of their land to the city for whatever "improvements" to Kenaston are made, as opposed to the city having to now buy the land.

@JoshGiesbrecht1: First official public rendering of Kapyong. So excited that this is becoming a reality. This will be the largest urban reserve in Canadian and international history. Note everything in the rendering is still fluid

I hope this development is incredibly successful! It looks like it has the potential to positively transform the relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people in the city.

So can anyone live in this residential development? Is it open to the public?

And what is Treaty #1 Crossing?

Are those accesses all along Kenaston?! And two hotels and two gas bars at Kenaston & Taylor?

I had hope that this would not just be another hacked-in job with tons of parking lots and numerous driveways on a road that shouldn't have them... clearly status quo is the aim here. Unfortunate.
