I think your statement is accurate on two points: 1) the original design for this project was far superior to what is actually being built and 2) the prime location fronting Klyde Warren Park is deserving of exceptional design. There are a limited number of building sites with this kind of panache associated with it.
I share your opinion that the original design was clearly superior with the eventual design paling in comparison. It's not that the eventual design is so bad, it is just that in comparison to the exuberant original it seems more bland.
Having said that I am still thrilled this project is underway.
The eventual design is interesting enough and will be a very positive addition to the Downtown Dallas skyline. Park District's two towers will form a cool "gateway" effect with them rising immediately north of Museum Tower across Woodall Rodgers.
And there is another near 400 foot tall tower, Lincoln Properties' "Symphony Tower", that just started rising next to Museum Tower that will reinforce that gateway effect.
There are so many towers under construction in Downtown Dallas right now where their positive effects on the central core's skyline are for the most part not yet being felt, with yet several more towers nearing groundbreaking:
