It's Neo-Gothic, and the Chrysler Building is Art Deco.

Cool, never visited the Woolworth or Chrysler buildings when I visited NY. Woolworth was tallest in the world at its time (1913)

Occupy Wall Street Has Accomplished At Least One Thing

Hostile Woolworth Building sign in its customary location, guarding the building’s Broadway entrance.

October 18, 2011

Quote:
Above is the sign that used to stand at the Broadway entrance to the landmark Woolworth Building. I noticed it back in September when I attended an office warming party for architect Jim Biber who now works out of a creamy white minimalist space on the building’s 20th floor. The party was great, but I thought the sign was obnoxious. I find it sad that the ornate lobbies of lower Manhattan’s historic office towers have been lost to the public, pretty much since 9-11.

A few days ago, I ran into Biber at another party and he told me a story about leaving his office with some friends. As they strolled out of the elevators and sauntered through the lobby, he was pointing out his favorite gargoyles. “There’s Cass Gilbert…” he was saying when a guard yelled, “No unauthorized tours!”

Yesterday, I was walking down Broadway toward the new white hot center of the universe, Zuccotti Park and I noticed, as I passed the Woolworth Building, that the sign was gone. Wow, I thought, maybe they’ve loosened up a little. Maybe they’ve realized how wrong it is to keep the public out. Then, while zig-zagging through the cacophonous jumble of occupied Zuccotti Park, I discovered that the sign had been, um, liberated. See below:

heres a photo that i took back in 1997, when i was working there, it shows the mediocre way they restored the corner pyramids.

Still pretty cool though. I'm jealous that you've been up there.

A lot of people underestimate how tall the woolworth building is.
240 meters is really tall. Skyscrapers covered in glass look taller, but old buildings are charming in their own way. I don't think us humans will ever be able to build that way anymore. We've kind of lost it, quite frankly.

Not because we can't but we are no longer are willing to pay for it. I could only imagine the cost of building the WW building today given the extreme attention to detail.

What an amazing unnoticed sin that happened atop this tower in the 1970s.

I just wish they could replicate the old spires in present day with better materials than the originals.

If a woman, this building would be a ten.

If I could pick up any building in New York and move it to Toronto, it would be this one.. With the Chrysler Building and American Radiator Building being the runners up. The Woolworth is simply incredible.

A building as beautiful as Woolworth would certainly be welcome in Toronto. I would also welcome NYC's Citigroup building too. In my opinion it would compliment FCP perfectly.

It blows me away that this building is turning 100 years old next year. Just think, 100 years ago today this beauty was under construction.
