I vaguely remember the place. I was about 5 or 6 when it burnt down. My older brother used to take swimming lessons there. At one point, after the building burnt down, the Y was going to move to where Fall Creek Pictures is today and replace the closed P & C there.

Hey, Ex, I came across some old Ithaca photos yesterdays and noticed that there was a YMCA where the Community Bank building stands today. apparently, it was destroyed by arson in 1978. Any memories of the old structure?

I do remember it directly, since I was a senior in high school, drove by the house several times a week, and knew the accused ( who was shot to death by the cops), the accomplices, and their lawyer, since the accused and accomplices used to clean Ide's, and I went to school with their lawyer's kids. At the time this was a high profile crime, Betwen being on unsolved crimes and in the New York Times, plus it was the first trial in the county to be shown gavel to gavel on local tv.

Edit: Sorry, wrong crime in Dryden. This one was a horrible one too, I was thinking about the one in Ellis Hollow right before Christmas of 1989 (The Harris family murders mentioned in the article) when a family of 4 was brutally murdered in their home, the 16 year daughter was raped, the house was robbed and set on fire, the cops killed the prime suspect when they went to arrest him, and the accessories wound up geting 2 years for using stolen credit cards after originally getting 15 year sentences for being accessories.

Finally, a political arguement I can support

I never understood why the bars closed at 1 in Ithaca, especially with Cornell and IC there.

It is kind of ridiculous that a college town has such an early closing time. Maybe some day.....

Maybe some day, the bars will be just like the ones back home in Syracuse. There's a development for you- a mixed use mid-rise with a bar on the ground floor.

There's one already in town (Seneca Place). Now to build one with Residential uses instead of a hotel in that mix would be good, as long as there were a couple of stories of offices to serve as a buffer.

Yeah, I wrote that while wondering if Kilpatrick's (sp?) was a bar, or merely a restaurant. But I guess with an Irish theme, they might as well go together.

Drastic climate change is in the forecast
Greenhouse gas emissions could spawn Georgia-like conditions in region

http://www.theithacajournal.com/apps...WS01/610100315

Wait, I thought global warming was a BAD thing. I don't care if Florida gets flooded out because of melting ice caps, if it makes Ithaca feel like Georgia!

EDIT: No offence against you, whit.

If it gets as bad as the models predict, and Ithaca becomes Georgia (the state, not the country) like in climate, July will be brutal, especially considering that so much of the housing stock was built pre-AC.

Well, I might move back if I don't have to shovel snow.

Sounds like a winner for the Ithaca area.

Well, with a new business school building planned, and the athletic center due to start construction soon, it looks like some happy days are ahead for IC.

A little something from the syracuse.com development briefs...

"In downtown Ithaca, the funky new No Radio Records does the ribbon-cutting thing at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday. The record store, at 312 W. Seneca St., features new and used CDs - I've been listening to some great Indigo Girls recently - sold in a cafe lounge made for relaxing on couches listening to tunes, sipping coffee, reading magazines and digging the occasional live performances. Don't know much about the CD you want to buy? You can listen to it first. "

Whoa, good find Vis. I hadn't heard about that. Maybe the Tower Records thread should take notice. I'm wondering if that's near the Shortstop Deli. Thanks.

Another depressing article about my brother's neigborhood:

http://www.theithacajournal.com/apps...WS01/610160341

I wish he'd move. Also sounds like some of the locals feel the college students being in the city causes this stuff among the locals.

What is it with these events centers. It seems that every school wants to build one up there (Binghamton, RIT, Brockport, and now IC). There's only so much demand for that much space, especially in some of these places. What about better labs, or more classrooms, or god forbid, actually freezing tuition or fee increases for a couple of years.

I think that since Ithaca doesn't have a convention center, the thought is to use this new facility for conventions held in the city. Since the city itself could never afford to build one, IC decided to go for it through donations and grants. I don't think new labs, classrooms, and offices are a bad idea, but I think this might be looked at as a revenue generator. Might help the kids in the long run cost wise. (but probably not)
