1498 STITTSVILLE MAIN STREET: SITE PLAN CONTROL APPLICATION
by Team Stittsville | Mar 10, 2022 | Development

The City has received a Site Plan Control application from Dunrobin Distilleries to construct a two-storey micro-distillery at 1498 Stittsville Main Street/8 Manchester Street, just north of Abbott Street. The new building will have retail space at the front, facing Stittsville Main, and the micro-distillery in the back.

The site currently contains a building which had been previously used for a variety of commercial uses including indoor golf, repairs, and headstone manufacturing. This building will be demolished.

The L-shaped site is approximately 1,113 m2 in area with frontage along Stittsville Main Street and Manchester Street. The building will face Stittsville Main while the parking area—containing 16 parking spaces (one barrier free)—will be accessed from Manchester. Bicycle parking and garbage storage will also be in this area. The building will be clad in a variety of materials including brick, barnboard.

The site is zoned TM9 (Traditional Mainstreet, Stittsville Main Street subzone), which permits a variety of residential and non-residential uses, including storefront industry such as this. The site received a minor variance in December 2021 to increase the permitted gross floor area to 509m2.

More information about the proposal is available on the City's DevApps site…

Dunrobin Distilleries started demolition of a building on Stittsville Main Street Monday to make way for a new “state-of-the-art” distillery to be built by 2023.

The proprietors said in a release that they aim to make a new craft distillery part of a “rejuvenation” of the street and an “exciting destination” for people in the village and across Ottawa.

Founded by Adrian Spitzer and Mark Watson in 2017, Dunrobin Distilleries tried to save the 80-year-old building at 1498 Stittsville Main St., but concluded it had been damaged beyond repair by being used as an illicit cannabis grow site.

As much as possible was salvaged of the building — which had a 1957 brush with fame — for use in the new distillery. Elvis Presley stopped at the building, then a gas station, to fill up his pink Cadillac on his way to an Ottawa performance, according to the release.

Demolition and clean-up of the site are expected to take up to three days.

The rural Ottawa-based distillery, which has its own organic farm, makes products including a single malt whisky, gin, vodka, Canadian rye whisky, Canadian maple rum, and bitters.
