It takes *forever*. But it doesn't turn brown until February, so there's that.

Also, first day at 20C+ at YYT!

A windy day on Signal Hill, a drive down Water Street (our main downtown drag on a lazy Sunday), and a trip up Barter's Hill.

St. John's from Fort Waldegrave.

This fort was erected in 1798 on the ruins of the legendary Old North Castle. The fort consisted of a battery (cannons), barracks, and - most unusually - a large metal chain. This chain was strung nightly across the Narrows (the entrance of St. John's Harbour) from Fort Waldegrave on the north side to Fort Amherst on the south side - a distance of 174 metres.

The chain was strong enough to shred any ships that tried to storm the harbour at night.

These two locations played a pivotal role in the Battle of Signal Hill, which - although virtually unknown to Canadians - was the final and one of the most important battles in the British defeat of the French in North America. After the British retook St. John's from the French, they surrendered and relinquished control of all eastern North America.

Very nice! I needed some cheering up after that hockey game. Forget architecture and narrow streets, I hate Boston

I am so happy, I could cry. Today, FINALLY, the trees burst to life. We have LEAVES!

To set the mood...

The new suburban Fairfield hotel, which JUST opened:

A cluster of construction/renovation that will result in a new parkade and three new condo buildings.

Pink flowers in a little half-roundabout on Church Hill.

A small park on the median between Gower Street and Queen's Road, dedicated to the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC), our police force.

Green leaves overlooking Duckworth Street.

I went down to Quidi Vidi Lake, the main lake in St. John's (which is blocked with them). This lake hosts the Royal St. John's Regatta, the oldest continuing sporting event in North America. Rowers are already practicing.

The former American military base, Fort Pepperell, which is being converted into St. John's newest residential subdivision.

Quidi Vidi Lake is one of the most popular recreation areas in the city for the elderly because it is one of the very, very few relatively flat trails.

Nice to see some green coming out, nice photos today. There's that strange apartment building in the last photo that steps down several floors towards the lake. I have been in there, and am pretty sure there are no elevators, and people have to walk down about five levels; how is that practical? It would be perfect to have roof gardens, but I don't see any green there.

I was out on another bike ride yesterday to Fort Amherst. Did this one solo as opposed to the last time when I went with my buddy who is out of shape, so I stopped a lot less to take photos (as I waited for him to catch up). So they are almost all from out at Fort Amherst.

Also, these are just phone pictures again.

Took this while on the bike along my way (gotta love OIS):

The Basilica (off in the distance) as seen from one of the old concrete bunker windows:

Cabot Tower and a cannon:

Boat setting off:

Chew, you take AMAZING photos. You compose them just perfectly. I love it!

I'm SO glad you only have a phone.

I may well have broken some rule. It is quite dangerous down there, the steps that lead down are are pretty crumbled in areas and the old concrete structures look like they might fall on ya at any moment!

There is a very small fence with a concrete slab there to make it easy to step over - no signage though to indicate it is off limits. There's always people down there.

Thanks for the kind words, coming from someone who takes professional-level photos, this means a lot! But, I took a whole pile more that I didn't post!

I do have a stand alone camera, but almost never have it with me.

It's easy to hop that fence. I picnicked on those ruins a few times last year. No big deal.

Signal, I know it may be a little atypical for your photo threads, but have you ever considered shooting at Bannerman or Bowring parks? Neither are necessarily downtown but the surrounding neighborhood in Bannerman could set up some nice shots, especially around the Circular Road area. And Bowring has always been a favorite place for me if only for the duck pond near sunset
