I notice it says "4 of the top NCAA Division 1 teams". That's pretty lazy reporting/writing. Very loose definition of "top". I don't think anyone would consider any of those teams among the top teams out of the over 350 in Division I.

Hopefully they brought some of their bands as the bands are an integral part of the college experience. Won't have the student section with all their chanting but the bands add some extra flavour.

I might hazard a bet that a top five USports team could beat any of them, thinking back to when Carleton beat Final Four team Wisconsin and lost in OT to the then number one ranked Syracuse. Wisconsin later came out and said the loss to Carleton was a wake up call for them and the lesson learned helped get them to the Final Four (which I believe they lost by one point)

Canada's Biggest Weekend in Football

Not only will university football's 2 biggest bowl games be played today but there's the Grey Cup on Sunday. As per usual, I'll be attending football parties both days. The
Western Mustangs host the Montréal Carabins while the UBC Thunderbirds host the St. Francis Xavier X-Men in the other bowl game. I'd be ecstatic to see the X-Men win it
all this year but no AUS team has done that since 2002.

Mustangs are down 27-3 to the Carabins early in the 4th. Western look shell shocked.

Update: Montreal defeat Western 29-3 and are heading to the Vanier Cup.

Canadian women won the Billie Jean King Cup. The men won the Davis Cup last year IIRC. Neither has registered as a big deal. If a Canadian wins a singles major then it's a big deal.

Majors in golf and tennis are huge. But the Ryder Cup in golf actually means a lot, unlike tennis team competitions.

The Toronto Arrows have folded. We are back down to zero professional rugby teams

The majority owner, Bill Webb, passed away this August, and it looks like they weren't able to find anyone able to match the investment he was putting in.

This really blows, I've been a season ticket holder since day 1, and they were the only real positive thing going on in men's rugby in this country.

I am sure that he has enough friends and contacts who would be intrigued in the idea.

I knew this would happen eventually.

The "Q" is changing its name.

It will now be know as the Ligue de Hockey Junior Maritimes-Québec.

This choice of name allows them to keep the same acronym (LHJMQ) and logo.

Until now the M was for "Majeur".

That makes sense. It's not like there were only a couple teams from out there (6/18). Were there any stories of teams or fans pushing for that?

The O must remain the O. There's 3 US teams out of 20 with 2 in MI and 1 in PA.

I just learned that it took until 2022 for Notre Dame to change the last lyric of their fight song (the most famous of them all) from "While her loyal sons are marching/Onward to victory." to "While her loyal sons and daughters/March on to victory." This was on the 50th anniversary of the school admitting women. And I'm sure basically all the womens games had the band or PA blasting their fight song. Plus they have mixed choirs singing the fight song at various venues that are not sports related. Just makes sense.

Cool commercial. Always awesome to see legends gathered in the same place regardless of team or sport. Like watching Nissan Heisman House commercials where they put several Heisman Trophy winners together in the same house doing something funny.

Or, as we say here in the Maritimes, the Quebec-Maritimes Junior Hockey League.

Long overdue. Six of the eighteen teams in the league are located in the Maritimes.

I imagine it will still be nicknamed “The Q”

New logo for the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League:

The francophone logo for the LHJMQ will remain the same.

Apparently Larry Tanenbaum, MLSE Chairman, is pursuing a WNBA team for Toronto. The story is that he’s pursuing this on his own and not as part of MLSE and that he is planning to use the coca-Cola Colosseum at the CNE grounds, rather than Scotiabank Arena. Although you never know, if crowds are higher than expected, he may move it over there.

Toronto is not a great sports town so it's a real roll of the dice. But if he can see this as a pet project and finance them then more power to him. I think I'd eventually take my daughters to a game.

But man, there's just so many sporting options now and only so many actual sports fans out there. The Toronto Arrows rugby went away but now there's the PWHL team.

Anyway, I like the idea of having teams in all sports even if it means I won't watch or attend. Just one of those things. Don't know how to explain it other than it's nice to "have things".

The Newfoundland Growlers of the ECHL are ceasing operations. The Trois-Rivières Lions are in the process of being sold. I wonder what’s next for St. John’s? Return of the QHJML?

Road trips or air travel to St John's are a huge pain for any league.

The AHL, the Q and the ECHL all failed in St. John’s. It’s too bad because I’m sure it’s a decent hockey market but yeah the relative remoteness probably doesn’t help.

As for the Lions, it’s not clear whether they’re moving away or not yet, but a junior team could easily occupy their nice and shiny arena.
