"Kinda sorta... there is a spur" ?

If there is a spur - some people may think thats a pretty "leading" direction for the LRT line down 107 to Government Centre Station - down past the Leg and the demolished Terrace Building with a stop there or down by the Old Epcor Power Plant and over the river on the old bridge deck ... with a stop at Kinsmen and up the Waterdale hill as part of the White Ave route. Speculation as I said ... but a delightful way to connect these important areas.

The original plan had it south on 107st to 99ave, then west to connect with the high-level bridge and over to whyte.

I like the route I mused ... only opportunity to ever get A rail line into the river valley for Kinsman, the parks areas and a redeveloped power plant. Would be good for festivals as well down in Kinsman / parks area.

It would be nice if 107 between Jasper and 102ave was mostly closed off and torn apart to allow the park to extend and connect both planned parts. With a little cul-de-sac on both ends of course, so access to the current businesses are still available.

But wishful thinking and I'd much rather see lrt extended over anything.

8 playgrounds in and around Downtown Winnipeg.

This park development is so critical.

fyi - 1881 schoolhouse/Dick Mather will have a playground by next year.
-Milner has intentions to have a playground on the south plaza.

2018/19 - design consultation begins
2021/22 - Central park opens

It's great. I've heard of some multifamily builders that are buying lots (or trying to at least) adjacent to the future park for the marketability that it will eventually present.

It has by far the greatest potential for change.

What would people like to see incorporated into this? For me:

-A central commons with a fountain
-A playground
-Active usages such as a couple of basketball/handball 3 on 3 hoops or a 3/4 court.
-1 or 2 seasonal food stands
-A set of washrooms

-1 or 2 seasonal food stands - would prefer spots for food trucks instead, more flexibility and variety
-A set of washrooms - agreed!
while I still like the idea of this project.. trying to make it be too many things is sure way to make it lousy at all of them.. simplicity is king!

an older thread, but relevant: http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=180839

I guess first question should be, what kind of park do we need?

with the river valley blocks away, do we need a nature park?
with the legislature pools blocks away, do we need another water park?

IMO, best fit would be an open square/plaza over the block, existing buildings grandfathered. lots of flexible space, have big big patios, even beer gardens in the summer

anchor the park around a large semi-interactive public art piece and call it a win!

Fountain to provide white noise and beauty. Parks are what make urban living work and they do wonders to make cities more beautiful, healthy, inviting. In great cities it is hard to walk more than a few blocks before you come across great park spaces.

ok, I'm sold. let's use the recycled antifreeze from all the vehicles that used to park there so we can run it year round! the green will really pop in the winter months too!

again, like the general idea of this.. but am worried it will be botched by trying to be 'all the things'

Can't use antifreeze, it will kill the birds that drink from it,

1. big classic fountain - I wish it would operate year round but maybe they could do something that involves lighting that also looks like water flowing for the winter seasons - something innovative
2. spray park for kids with small "all season" vandal proof play area
3. I am not sure what to think about washrooms and wonder of they might be better as stand alone outlets like in Amsterdam...the phone booth sized types...
4. Grass area should dominate the park for picnics and laying on the grass

That pretty much covers it.

We lack fountains in this city - if other Canadian cities (which, shockingly enough, also have long winter months) can have them, why not here?

I've been a huge advocate of public washrooms, but they need to be maintained and secure - nothing like using a public facility that is dirty and has no asswipe.

...cuz edmonton?

if they can't even get bathrooms right.. what makes you think they can tackle the challenges of a fountain?

besides, it's not like we could look after the big classic fountain we used to have...
