Baconfest - Planning film festival

The Alberta Professional Planners Institute (APPI) Calgary Events Committee in partnership with the General Manager of Planning, Development & Assessment (Rollin Stanley), The Calgary Public Library and DIRTT Environmental Consulting are proud to present Baconfest - a planning documentary film festival.

This series of movies will explore a variety of aspects of City Building. The films are done by Ed Bacon, who is the only city planner to grace the cover of Time Magazine (and yes - he is the father of Hollywood Actor Kevin Bacon).

The movies run Wednesday evenings from 6 to 8pm (approx.) January 8, 15, 22 and 29; February 12, 19 and 26. There will be the movies and panel/group discussion.

These events are free - no registration required. For those of you are are planners with APPI looking for continuous professional learning credits, these events will qualify for structured learning units.

Just a reminder that Baconfest begins this coming Wednesday - January 8th with a variety of planning documentary films over the next 7 weeks (each Wednesday night) at the Dutton Theatre.

Hahaha! There is a film called "Where Do Children Play? (57 mins)"

It reminds me of that NIMBY a couple years ago that wrote the comment in regarding the Pixel development:

WHERE WILL THE CHILDREN PLAY

Hope those of you who attended Baconfest enjoyed it! Roughly 300 for our first night - which was an amazing turn out. I'm sure I saw some of you; but since I was helping to organize and I had to do the introductions and then head to a community meeting I wasn't able to say hi.

Lots more movies (and Bacon) to come - see you on night 2. Yes, if you missed it, we did have cured bacon from Charcut and it will be available every night of the festival, as will the sandwiches and snacks!

Baconfest Night #3 is tonight; 6pm at the Dutton Theatre.
Free to all, all are welcome and there are free refreshments (including Bacon).
The last of the Bacon films is tonight and we are also showing "Where do the children play" this evening.

Baconfest #4 is tonight, 6pm at the Dutton Theatre. The event is free and we will be adding another movie to the line up. There will be refreshments and bacon.

Due to popular demand, we've extended Baconfest one more week.
Come celebrate what has been an incredibly successful public engagement (1500 total attendance, typically 200 a night (70% being members of the public)).

Joining Planning General Manager, Rollin Stanley, will be Dan Burden, Executive Director of the Walkable & Liveable Communities Institute, and Tamara Lee from the citizen-led Bow to Bluff Placemaking Initiative.

The first Baconfest follow up event will be May 21st at the Dutton Theatre from 6-9pm and is free.
This is the Calgary Public Library's Social Justice Encounter 2014 - the topic this year will be on Affordable Housing. There will be presentations from Joel Armitage, Director of the City of Calgary's Office of Land Servicing and Housing; David Watson, CEO of Attainable Homes Calgary; and Rollin Stanley, General Manager of the City of Calgary's Planning, Development and Assessment Department.

The program will include a presentation on the various programs mentioned above and a general discussion on the issue of Affordable Housing - the problem and potential solutions. The doors open at 5:30 and there will be refreshments provided. Following the main event, from 8 to 9 there will be a mixer where other groups related to Affordable Housing will be present on the main floor of the library to talk and engage with in a social setting.

This event is free for the public and is presented in partnership with the Alberta Professional Planners Institute (Calgary Events Committee), Attainable Homes Calgary, The City of Calgary and of course the Calgary Public Library. Registration is through the Public Library's program registration system and can be found at this link:
