I am not sure exactly where these go but Halifax is slowly joining the heritage building "uplighting" party.

It makes a big difference:

The whole restoration of the Parliamentary Precinct is a massive undertaking that will take decades. Well worth the wait and billions of dollars.

I commend Governments of the past 20 years (Chrétien, Martin, Harper and Trudeau) for leaving politics out of it and pushing the project forward.

I'm pretty torn about the way that "restoration" turned out. Obviously it looks better than before, but nowhere near as good as original. The street level reactivation is what's most important though

Went on a walk to see the fiiiinally unveiled restoration of our 113 year old city hall. It turned out amazing...

Very nice. It reminds me of the University of Winnipeg / Wesley College restoration from about 15 years ago (my photo). They had to slice off the fronts of all the stones and replace them with new ones, which they got from the original source in New England somewhere. The building dates to the early 1890s.

Which issue? The first part of my post was in regard to the Montreal building restoration (my issue was that the aluminum sections between the floors look cheap). I have no issue with the Calgary City Hall restoration, the building turned out better than my highest hopes. The paving around it could have definitely been better though (just grey bricks and concrete).

That UW restoration looks awesome. Some of our city hall bricks were so far gone we had to get new stuff in from Spain and Poland if I recall correctly. But 80% of the stones are original. The entire building was disassembled brick by brick and then rebuilt with all the bricks in their original location, with the one of a kind (in the Americas, 3 in the world) clock being restored too. Apparently before the restoration, the clock tower was at risk of separating from the building and collapsing westward.

The side elevation is especially nice. Glad to see that Calgary spent the money to do this.

Wow. I feel like that would have been demolished or facadismed anywhere else. Glad they restored the entire building.

In 1977, the city decided to "renovate" the building in this glorious style...

In 2016, the city release rendering of new wing and a complete restoration of the building by the FABG architectural firm.

Wow! That Verdun Auditorium reno undoes a massive architectural injustice. So nice to see heritage buildings restored and not facadectomized!
