Winnipeg has two other Silva Cell installations one on South side Broadway around Carlton and another on King st.

Very Cool.

I was sort of surprised to see that they were not going to use this product in the exchange district streetscape upgrade. Stantec has instead specified tree wells, so I can see these trees getting root bound in the future if they last.

Name that artist

What is the name of the artist that has chosen alleys or back lanes in Regina as a theme?

Fun read on people leaving Winnipeg, and how a few people want nothing more than to get away only to end up coming back and appreciating the city more

I think rings true for any places people grow up in, be it Winnipeg, Regina, Saskatoon, etc...; they don't consider the advantages or what's good about the city (perhaps due to familiarity) until they get out there and get a taste of what else is there

For some people, it fits more with their lifestyle, choices, needs, and/or their direction and end up staying away; for others it brings them back and makes them appreciate where they live more.

Lol, I was just coming on here to post that. It is indeed a great read.

Back in November, one of the morning co-hosts for the radio station I listen to was "moving out to BC to start the next stage of her career and we will miss her!" She is coming back tomorrow.

I finally got around to making that photothread.

Enjoy.

Did anyone else attempt to register on-line for fall and winter activities with the City of Regina this morning? It took me 15 minutes to log in, 10 minutes to register offspring #1 in soccer, 10 minutes to register offspring #2 in swimming, only to to be wait-listed, five minutes to checkout and 10 minutes to pay.

Apparently a billion dollar stadium is OK, but replacing the 8088 that's hosting the City of Regina's web pages with hardware from this century is not good use of public funds.

Yes! My wife wanted to register our little guy into swimming class, and currently he is on the waiting list, too! Swimming seems to be a pretty popular and important learning activity for young kids! It would help more if he liked being in the water! (So far, he's our little Klingon!) I'm sure in time he'll grow to enjoy it, and it might just save his or another's life!

"You can register on-line for those things?" says the guy living in a city where registration for those services still requires attending a facility in person.

The moral of this story is, if you're going to sneak into a building to fuck, try not to sneak into a building full of computer geeks.

You guys gotta get sound on those things.

Sam Katz's Winnipeg, disgusting really.

Let's see if we've got this straight...

* The second-in-command in the Winnipeg Fire Department secretly negotiated a deal worth more than $15 million with the mayor's business partner to build four new fire halls, then hid the identity of who got the contract from elected members of city council.

* In order to circumvent instructions from council -- in writing -- that the winner of the fire halls contract be approved in advance, the deputy fire chief divided the contract into four: one for each new fire station, so that each fell under his city-approved spending limit and he could keep the secret of who got the contracts from the public.

* After the secret deal was accidentally revealed, councillors were told they had either to rubberstamp a three-lots-for-one land swap that the deputy chief negotiated with Shindico Realty for one fire hall built on Shindico-owned land, or else pay $990,000 -- a non-negotiable price set by Shindico president and pal o' the mayor, Sandy Shindleman.

The rest:

Roads in Winnipeg aren't too bad but the concrete is weird to someone used to asphalt roads. They definitely age better. Thunder Bay has one asphalt road from the 70s and it is in better shape than most asphalt roads from the 90s. The seams at regular intervals is kind of annoying though. Nothing beats riding on a fresh, seamless asphalt road.
