The first crane base is installed as of Oct 31/07

I was talking with a few of the workers, they said that the bottom of the pit the crane is in is at 65 feet below the ground level (not sure if sidewalk or the eventual level of the apron). The crane base itself is about 5 feet from the base of the rebar thats holding it up. The one person I asked didn't know when the crane was coming in, likely within the next two to three weeks he speculated.

As mersar mentioned above, the base of the first crane is being installed. According to the guys at the site, they are going to pour the base on Monday, Nov 5.

They are drilling the caissons for the foundation wall around the south end of the site, where the York Hotel used to be. I imagine that we will start seeing digging there pretty soon.

^ Excellent. Now, I believe that Mersar mentioned the crane is supposed to arrive in the next week or two.

And according to reports this morning the developer of the Bow has opted to purchase the central crane that was required due to costs, rather then to rent it. Supposedly the crane will max out at around 900' with a lift capacity of 30 Mt.

There is a decent amount, but not as much as it appears before they can start working on the concrete. Here is roughly the footprint of the tower superimposed over the Herald's last picture:

Realistically they only need to remove the east rampway and lower the rest of the site only a few more feet before they could start working on the main raft slab. And as my photo from last night shows, they are starting to dig down on that eastern side pretty quickly.

Must be a big crane. You can see the top of it from the Deerfoot.

With regards to the steel being used for this project, does anyone know where it is coming from and since not many buildings are built of steel in Calgary have they brought in iron workers from some other place? I imagine it takes a great deal of skill an experience to build this efficiently.

I'd heard that they were recruiting workers from down east as you are correct, there is very little steel work in Calgary.

The actual steel is likely going to be sourced from Ontario (or around there), as the joint venture (between Supreme Group and Walters Group) that has the steel part of the contract has fabrication plants in 3 places in Ontario. The PR they put out mentions that the Bow will use 32,000 tonnes of structural steel in total. The one part of the JV (Walters Group) is also doing the steel work for Bay-Adelaide in Toronto.

A few more details:
  • Walters Group is based in Ontario, and has 3 fabrication plants there
  • Supreme Group appears to be Edmonton based, and has plants in Edmonton, and Saskatoon
  • S.G. has done projects in Calgary before, although much smaller (buildings at Mount Royal, U of C, )
  • W.G. did work for the Foster designed 'Leslie Dan School of Pharmacy' at U of T (they mention they've done work in AB, but I didn't find specific projects)
