More details of planned Helmut Jahn tower

By Dennis Rodkin
Crain's Chicago

A new rendering of the upper floors of a proposed 74-story tower designed by Helmut Jahn details the condos' glassy transparency and the architect's selection of metal finishes for the exterior.

"You can see that the inside feels as light as the outside. Helmut was very passionate about making that happen," said Jordan Karlik, whose JK Equities is one of three firms partnering on the development the tower, at 1000 S. Michigan Ave.

That being said, I'm not sure if the Landmarks commission made this building bland enough yet. I won't be appeased until its a featureless, pasty white blob!
I wasn't at the hearings, but I'm not sure that Landmarks can be blamed for the current design. AFAIK, the main issue that they had with this project's proposal was it's height. They certainly didn't object to it getting wider as it got higher because it still does that. I can't imagine that they ordered Jahn to stick two disparate forms on top of each other.

Including the roof, this tower will actually be 76 floors. The 832' height remains as is.

This building is growing on me. The base needs a bit of work but the tower itself is pretty nice.

If anyone heads down to get Essex photos today, check this one out too. It looked like they may be getting ready to tear up the asphalt.

This is gradually being tweaked, modified and edited into a very nice looking tower which will have a fairly commanding presence on the S. Michigan Ave. streetscape. Though imagine the original version at 1,000 ft on that plot. Woah.

Silly question. Anyone know if Jahn is pronounced with a 'j' like John, or with a 'y' like Yahn?

It's a soft 'j'; sounds like "yawn." Dude's German.

is it just me or does this angle seem impossible to anyone else?

we're supposed to be looking south down Michigan Avenue with this view correct? And we see nothing but open ocean...

Ridiculous. A building this size should really have views of the Chicago Ocean.
