Skyplex project vote passes unanimously
$500 million proposal would bring world's tallest rollercoaster, drop tower to Orlando

Dec 01, 2015
Quote:
Orange County leaders gave the final approval for Skyplex to move ahead with the $500 million project along International Drive.

The public hearing began at 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Universal Orlando came out strongly against Skyplex, claiming the height of its rollercoaster and drop tower are not compatible with the surrounding area.

Universal and a group of residents recently formed an organization called “Save Our Orange County Community," which sent out mailers encouraging residents to express opposition to the project.

Opponents claimed their concerns center on noise, light pollution and the extra traffic Skyplex may create near the already-busy intersection of Sand Lake Road and I-Drive.

Supporters of Skyplex argued the project does fit the I-Drive area and that it will be a key part of the rebirth taking place.

In recent weeks, there was a flurry of lobbying that led up to Tuesday’s commission meeting.

Lobbyists with both sides met with commissioners, and a fresh round of anti-Skyplex mailers went out late last week from the Save Our Orange County group.

Here's the latest on I-Drive's future polercoaster, Starflyer and more

Quote:
Three of International Drive's high-flying attractions are getting closer to bringing more thrills to the tourism corridor.

Parts of the 501-foot Skyscraper polercoaster at the $460 million Skyplex entertainment center are already being built, said Joshua Wallack, developer of the project who also owns and operates Mango's Tropical Cafe Orlando and is building the Hollywood Plaza parking garage center.

People ask me when are we breaking ground, and I tell them there's a tremendous amount of engineering to be done and this is a first. We placed the order for certain materials that have to do with the Skyscraper that are being manufactured," he said, but did not go into detail. Skyplex, which includes a surf park, zipline, entertainment, dining and retail plaza, a 350-room hotel and the Skyscraper polercoaster and observation deck, is slated to begin construction later this year and be completed in 2018.

This coaster structure will be 700 feet tall in the middle of Orlando's suburbia so how is it more atrocious or ugly than this in Vegas ?

What is amazing is this will be the tallest structure if built between Miami & Atlanta.

Hey it's not really much uglier than the one in Vegas, so build it!! As long as it makes a buck. Maybe put a Walmart Supercentre on top of it if it makes money too.

So is it actually going to get built? They should build a free fall waterslide off the side of it too, where you could reach terminal velocity in a bathing suit.

I haven't heard anything recent as well in terms of a solid u/c date. But maybe well see some movement on it. Looks like its administrative/approvals process right now from various agencies.

It was approved from the county, but possibly its legal/permit stuff they are working on, OR just waiting for the right time.
