I know people will always have a hard on for this building but despite it's height, it just doesn't have that overall sense of power and strength that skyscrapers 1,500 feet shorter than the Burj has. It's a really tall needle and not much else.

there's not around it to give it a sense of scale; a mall, lake and a few scattered buildings. the sears tower and the empire state building are surrounded by dense skylines which give them a clear idea how massive they are. i guarantee, you stick this building in the chicago loop, and your perception of it would change...

I think that's the whole problem. Give its surroundings, Burj appears to be quite a large fish in a somewhat small and shallow pond.

This entire tower looks like it is ripped right out of a sci-fi film.

Yeah, pretty amazing huh? I have noticed some Dubai hate on this forum, what's up with that?

It's not hate, it's envy.

In America we build skyscrapers when there's demand.
In Dubai they build tall because they can.

And also, a lot of the skyscrapers built in NYC during the building booms after WW2 and in the 70's were built strictly to make money- a lot of owners refused to spend a little extra to make those facades look nice, or on innovative designs. So a lot of buildings went up with bare minimalist facades, much to the consternation of architecture critics and others.

But in Dubai, the architects appear to have been let off the leash and told to have fun, and the result is some of the most interesting looking, and downright cool skyscrapers to have been built in recent years.

I've heard a rumor- that a lot of these skyscrapers are sitting empty or mostly empty. Is there any truth to that, or is it just rumors from those looking to take the pee out of Dubai?
