I find the Crown Royal Northern Harvest to be much superior to the original, at little extra cost.

I'm fascinated by Canadian whisky because it's so incredibly underrated. Until recently there has been way too much space taken up by the bottom-shelf mass-market brands, but things are changing thanks to craft distillers and some more interesting releases from the big distillers. When I was in Calgary this winter I picked up a bottle of this:

Source: LCBO

If you've ever bought an upmarket American rye whiskey like Whistlepig, chances are it was made in Calgary, shipped across the border, aged and blended. Alberta Premium is often considered bottom-shelf but it's actually pretty decent and this cask-strength bottling really lets it shine.

Alberta Distillers also made Dark Horse which is one of my favourite Canadian whiskies, but apparently it has been discontinued.

Lot 40 is my go-to Canadian rye for both sipping and mixing. It's pretty much everything I want in a rye.

Otherwise, I find a lot of the big Canadian distillers aim for a middle-of-the-road profile that is a bit underwhelming. Gibson's 12 is a good example. I find it makes a great highball but it's a boring whisky to sip.

In a way, the Canadian whisky industry is similar to that of Japan, because it's dominated by a big few players that make everything from bottom-shelf swill to interesting releases aimed at whisky geeks.

Whiskey is about 90% marketing, 10% quality.

I mean, who would be crazy enough to shell out hundreds of dollars for this:

Seems to retail for nearly $600 in most Canadian locations.

There is a reason why Budweiser is "The most popular beer in the world" and it sure isn't because of the taste (unless, of course, steer piss is your thing).

I have a list of whisk(e)ys I have tried

Obviously being Canadian I have tried a lot of Canadian Whiskys vs Scotch or Burbon. I also consider them Rye Whiskys if they are 100% rye. Crown Royal Northern Harvest is 95% Rye, so I still consider it a Canadian Whisky vs a Rye Whisky

Tab 1 is my beer list if interested. I rate out of 5

Sheet here:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...#gid=280207750

I have tried 2 Canadian whiskys that are 5/5 in my opinion

Canadian Club Classic 12 Year
-also a great value even at the LCBO

Forty Creek Confederation Oak
-Kinda pricy. I typically get it at duty free stores.

I wonder if there's something primitive and instinctual in us that makes the colour of whisky look so damn appealing. Even before I had ever tasted it, I thought my grandfathers Scotch collection looked like golden nectar. Then your first taste as a kid is not what you expect

Even with beer, dark stouts don't do nearly as much for me visually as a deep golden ale.

40 creek usually does it for me when I want a rye whisky, I'm not really a fan of too many others. having the distillery nearby is definitely an advantage.

Both good quality and excellent value for the money...well as far as prices in Canada are concerned.

Anyone had a single malt Canadian whisky?

This one is $10 off but unsure if it will be any good

For what it's worth, I occasionally watch a whisky-oriented YouTube channel called the Whiskey Tribe, and one of the co-hosts absolutely raves about Glen Breton. I think he may of said it was the best Canadian whisky he's had. Dude knows his stuff too.

I'm guessing the label is outdated? There are many single-malt whiskies now made in Canada. I've heard Glen Breton is just okay but I've heard really great things about Two Brewers single malt from the Yukon. Unfortunately it's quite expensive ($100+).

Great thread. I usually go for a bourbon or a Tennessee mash but will use crown royal for mixing around the campfire in summer. Not a huge fan of CC or forty creek and had terrible experiences with RR in my younger days but at-least the bottle came with a sticker.

I also just got my hands on a bottle of this. Had a Calgary friend ship me a bunch of bottles. Beats the LCBO in selection and price and it's the only way to get a varied mix of spirits to the door in Ontario during Covid (legal or not).

Very keen to crack this bottle as I've never owned a bottle at cask strength. I find more than anywhere else, rye from Alberta is always underpriced, even by Canadian standards.

So a new 4-week sale at the LCBO has started.

Here are the 3 Canadian whiskys I am considering. Might end up buying 1 of these. Any recommendations?

Bearface 7 Year

Gibson's 8 Year

Glynnevan (no age statement)

Thanks, got this on your recommendation in addition to the Bear Face.

The LCBO seems to have a lot of whiskys on sale right now so I picked some foreign ones to try as well. Hefty bill but now I don't have to visit for a while - good for quarantine lol

Updated my whisky sheet if interested

https://heatseekerwhisky.blogspot.co...nest-bold.html

One of the whisky blogs I've been following to try and expand my knowledge base just came out with a new review relevant to me. I've been looking for a new $30-$40 bottle and have heard good things about the regular Gibson's Finest, though nothing about Bold until this review. Anyone tried it?

Ended up opening the Bearface 7 for Canada Day. It is like a craft beer, except craft whisky. The age it in Collingwood, then move it to wine casks in BC and then finish it in Hungarian oak exposed to the elements.

I think it's the best mixer I have had yet.

Taking it neat or with ice/water is nothing special in my mind, but all the flavors infused into it don't seem to get diluted/overpowered in a mixer.

Going through all that for something that's best as a mixer seems like a lot of unnecessary fuss.
