The Habs signed Carolina's best player for them on a 2nd contract that gets him to UFA as fast as possible.
There wasn't anything particularly creative about the bonus structure. They minimized the salary element to $700k per season and paid the rest out in signing bonuses. They followed the CBA rules to the letter for the maximum decrease allowable year over year and the rule that states that the last year cannot be more than 50% less than the maximum payment in any other individual year.

Where they half-assed it was that the AAV was pretty much in line with what was considered to be Aho's value anyway. Maybe even better. So, effectively, the Habs relieved Carolina of the burden of negotiating and got them to a number close to what they probably would have paid anyway. If they were serious about getting the player, they should have upped the ante and make Carolina think about it for more than 24 hrs

That Aho was willing to sign that offer sheet is perhaps an indication he's not that happy in Carolina.

Tom Dundon was willing to invest $250M in the AAF this winter. He probably has the cash around to pay Aho up front.

If you look at the total list of players who played (or coached) for both teams I'm sure it would be substantial. How often do you get this many at once though lol

Rittich is an RFA still, wonder what they offer him, no way they let him walk this year. Flames goaltending situation is as interesting as ever with no sure #1 lol.

No. Aho was willing to sign the offer sheet because he is happy to play for that amount money and get to UFA as soon as possible.

Carolina might be ok with the money, but they hate the term.

There have only been a couple actual trades between the teams, lots are players who didn't sign, or were traded to another team who then traded them to Edmonton.

I guess I'm thinking of Spezza and Phaneuf. Big names but not many names?

Spezza hasn’t been a senator in ages and signed as a free agent.

Rumour has the Islanders giving Marner an offer sheet for $12.5M. I really hope it's true!

True but he'll always be a Senator to me.

They can go for it as far as I'm concerned. That would be a ridiculous offer.

It's about what the Leafs would have to offer, offer sheet or not.

It's pretty clear cut at this point imo. The leafs match any offer that doesnt have four firsts coming back (5 years at anything below ~10.6). Anything above 11 probably doesn't get matched and they take the picks and the cap space to potentially make their own offer sheet next year.

Subsection to the non-matching scenario
- The Leafs work out a trade with the signing team to turn some of the future 1sts into usable assets now.

fwiw I think the threshold is any AAV that comes in higher than what Auston Matthews is getting.

Kinda crazy to do that before re-upping Barzal.

I don't see an offer sheet happening. The Leafs have the cap space to match what his market value is. Any team that goes over his value are not only signing a bad contract but giving up 4 firsts to do so.

As for the Islanders they are likely a bubble team next year even with Marner unless they get God like goaltending 2 years in a row. 4 first round picks from them could prove very very valuable.

Canucks have signed Michael Ferland - 4 years at 3.5 per.

Ferland would fit well on the top line with Pettersson and Boeser, wreaking havoc to create opportunities for his more skilled linemates.

Ironically it was him who seemed to single handedly knock the Canucks out of the playoffs a few years back.

We will take Neal, thank you very much.

But honestly, how Holland was able to trade Lucic straight up is beyond me. Must be Jedi Mind Tricks or something...
