Was lucky enough to go to the soft opening last night for the SuperBowl. It is a very cool spot. Having food and a great mix of drinks and beer will be fantastic to draw a variety of audiences. It's not just for golf people. The outside decks are going to be fantastic. One of the owners even mentioned potentially an outside firepit on one of the decks (they have 2 out front with garage door openings to the bar) if there is sufficient space. That would be really cool.

Checked out the bunker last night and it really is a gem of an addition to downtown. They spared no cost in building this place, feels like something you'd see in a much larger city. The sims they are using have top of the line technology, better than any sim ive ever seen.

Theres a nice amount of seating if you just want to go for food and drinks, pizza was really good and so was the service.

I can imagine they'll use the projector screens on the SIMS for big sporting events when it makes sense to.

They are now working on the third floor of the Tomato Building. It is going up surprisingly fast. You can now get a good idea what the ultimate massing of the building will be like.

There has been incredulity and doubt expressed here upon recent rumours that Ashford wants to go really big on the Ashford/Downing signature tower (maybe as tall as 50 storeys). This is understandable and not surprising, but, perhaps we should cast our eyes a little to the west to see what is possible.

The city of Kelowna BC is only about 30% larger than Moncton (CMA population of 225,000). Kelowna has decided to actively densify the core in order to preserve the valuable surrounding vineyards and orchards in the Okanagan Valley. The new Moncton Urban Growth Strategy also intends to promote downtown densification over sprawl.

Downtown apartment towers are already springing up in Kelowna, the largest of which is 35 storeys (One Water Street). This sounds similar to the 30 storey Infinity Tower recently approved in Moncton.

There are a couple of other impressively tall developments in Kelowna which are now under construction:

UBC-Okanagan is planning a brand new downtown Kelowna campus largely confined to a single building, which will be 43 storeys tall. The height is partially governed by the fact that the building will contain student housing in addition to campus facilities and classrooms. The Okanagan campus is comprehensive, including a full fledged medical school.

https://ok.ubc.ca/about/ubco-downtown/

Water Street by the Park is a large new multi-building residential property on the lakeshore in downtown Kelowna, the signature tower of which (The Eli) will be 42 storeys tall.

This sounds suspiciously like the rumoured Ashford/Downing project (multiple buildings with a signature tower).

Could Moncton be the Kelowna of the east (a medium sized city with an impressively tall skyline)???

Perhaps the rumours surrounding Ashford/Downing aren't quite so outlandish after all.........

Ill admit I'm one of those who are a bit cautious/doubtful. It's just my personal expectations as I'd rather be proven wrong and pleasantly surprised rather than dismayed. Once we see Infinity confirmed for 30 storeys and finally getting built, it would probably be easier to conceive of the possibility.

If it's also reliant on major city groundwork as a prerequisite, then by the time it's set for construction, the population of the CMA may very well make it more feasible by then.

The idea of a downtown university campus in one building is very intriguing. It would make a lot of sense to have administration, classrooms, and residences etc. under one roof, and certainly take up less land than multiple buildings.

But as much as it would be a fantastic addition to downtown Moncton, I don't think the required desire exists. And there's always the financial considerations - who would pay for it?

If the will were there, I wonder if the old Moncton High could be an option? It sits on a large lot including quite a bit of undeveloped area north of the building.

I just don't think this idea is on anyone's radar, unfortunately.

Looks like a prominent location will soon be available for lease in downtown moncton. Galco has seized the property and locked out Brainworks Marketing for not paying rent. Photoproof of this is on the Moncton subreddit page.

Riverview private school relocating to new Moncton facility
New facility for Eastgate Academy under renovation on Millennium Boulevard

The academy said the new Moncton facility will be a modern and expansive learning environment that fosters “creative, collaborative, and holistic student development.”

Landry said there is an existing building that is being renovated “top to bottom” and will have flexible spaces like learning commons, seminar rooms, a lab, gymnasium, and playground.

Another benefit to the space is the proximity to amenities like trails, nature parts, sports centres and community centres, said Eastgate.
On the surface, a somewhat odd location for a private school. This will be a renovated industrial building on the industrial portion of Millennium Blvd, but will be very close to the sports fields of the CN Sportplex, the Superior Propane Centre 4-Ice complex, and IG Group Sports Dome. It is also only a short walk to Centennial Park for outdoor activities.

Wasn’t Eastgate Academy planned to be part of the new residential development off of Elmwood just north of Granite?

Indeed, but, if I recall correctly, they weren’t planned for one of the initial phases of construction. Perhaps this move is just a stopgap. School enrolment was not thriving in their original Riverview location (too remote from the bulk of the metro population). They needed a more central location for business reasons.

Eastgate is a serious institution. They are gradually increasing the number of school grades they offer, and, plan to be a full k-12 school. They have recently been certified as an International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme School, and no doubt plan to be a full IBS school in the future.

They may still move to their intended campus in the Eastgate subdivision off Elmwood in 10 years or so. We’ll see. That location could provide them with a leafy setting similar to Rothesay Collegiate, but, they have to build a business case first.
