How many will become dated period pieces?

I firmly belive than deconstructivism will date itself very soon. It just isn't that shocking anymore, and with that gone, its reason for existance goes away as well. Most deconstructivists are media whores, which will only quicken the abandonment of the style.
Futuristic itself is a relative and thus constantly changing term. When we say something looks futuristic, we're comparing it to what we have seen up to now. Of course if we were to wait 10 or 20 or 50 years and compare it again, it would look either ahead of its time but still contemporary or old-fashioned, or it would look dated. Almost nothing would continue to look futuristic, and even if it did for a while, it would eventually give way to one of the other two. Nothing can stay futuristic forever.

TA is definately dated, the brutalist treatment of the exterior goes far in doing that. RenCen, and other restrained (I like the word) modernist pieces tend to age much better. Some of Dallas' buildings look very similar to what's being proposed today. Fountain Place isn't much different than BoA in New York in concept.

I agree with Leewilson. I have the same oppinion. Future is relative, depends on the moment and how we are looking for something comparing to our experiences back in live and this changes everytime everymoment. Today something is futuristic, tommorow with new projects would be not anymore. With a spread knowledge almost nothing is futuristic for a while.
Also, I agree this thread is one of the most interesting in site. Congratulations for the one how the idea had.
The torsional tower in Malmo is pretty good. As it is very higher comparing to a low city, makes it predominant. If the same construction would be in NYC or in middle a jungle of high blgds, the dominant aspcet would be not there anymore.

So, for me, the towers of 40 years ago, the true beauties of modernism, still appear to me as the most 'futuristic' design we've had so far.

^ Ohhhhh yes.

But, ohhhhh no! This thread title should be changed to The Most Non-futuristic Buildings...

In the future, large buildings and skyscrapers will be built around space constaints, and energy and material resourcefulness.

IMHO, most of these "futuristic" designs in this thread can be considered very non-futuristic based on what we presently speculate will be the concerns in the future. They're tacky, kitschy, and dated, like that translucent plastic computer hardware look of the 90s. They belong in Vegas, Dubai, and other pseudo-cities begging for stature...as well miniaturized versions of AlienWare cases.

To each their own I guess. We'll have to see what the future brings.

I think the Ren-Cen held up nicely, although a recladd would do it wonders.
