That looks a little suspect of Gensler's proposal for Hemisfair...

But that would be awesome if we could get something like that for us, in the future though. We would have to start small with room to grow.

From The Rivard Report

University of Texas at San Antonio President Taylor Eighmy has some lofty goals for his university over the next decade: increase enrollment to more than 45,000 students, grow the first-year student retention rate to 85 percent, and raise the six-year graduation rate to 60 percent. The latter two goals he wants to achieve by 2023.

More growth for downtown SA.

Update

Not much new news here, but looks like full steam ahead for UTSA's DT plans.

https://therivardreport.com/utsa-lau...22-completion/

"The University of Texas at San Antonio on Friday formally launched its National Security Collaboration Center – a high-tech nexus of U.S. Department of Defense contractors, intelligence agencies, cyberwarriors, and academic researchers.

Housed on the third floor of the North Paseo Building on UTSA’s Main Campus, the center has been operational since October, occupying about 20,000 square feet. Many of the center’s 32 private-sector and federal partners – including such entities as the National Security Agency Texas, the 24th and 25th Air Forces, Booz Allen Hamilton, and IPSecure – have already moved into the temporary home for the center.

By 2022, UTSA plans to build a $33 million, 80,000-square-foot facility in downtown San Antonio east of the university’s Downtown Campus. The building also will house a new School of Data Science."

"As for the permanent home of the center – which will be one of the anchors of the soon-to-be-expanded UTSA Downtown Campus – “it can’t happen soon enough,” Eighmy said."

Hear hear.

Old prison to be knocked down as UTSA expands downtown campus

Quote:
An old jail that holds federal prisoners will be knocked down to give UTSA room to grow its downtown campus.

Knocking down the jail is part of a puzzle the city, county and UTSA have all been playing to get enough land for the university to expand.

The building bordered by Laredo Street, Dolorosa, Nueva Street and the San Pedro Creek was once the Bexar County Jail.

The county still owns it, but it’s been leased for decades to The GEO Group, a private company that runs a federal jail.

"It's very convenient because it's just a few blocks from the federal courthouse,” says U.S. Marshal Susan Pamerleau.

She says the 600-bed jail holds inmates waiting for trial or sentencing.

"It's an old-style jail. It's not efficient,” Pamerleau says. “Lots of things have improved in terms of jail construction, jail configuration."

Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff says by next spring, GEO will move out and demolition crews will move in.

"They got 600 tourists in there that we don't really need in San Antonio,” Judge Wolff says.

The prime downtown real estate will help UTSA transform its downtown campus to include a business school, data science school and cybersecurity collaboration.

"Cities are going to live and die by their talented workforce,” Judge Wolff says. “If you don't develop talent, if you don't recruit talent and you don't retain it, a city will go downhill. And this is going to be a big, big step forward in helping us do that."

"How much do you think the county's going to spend to get to that step forward?" reporter Emily Baucum asks.

"The money that we'll spend taking that jail down,” Judge Wolff says, estimating about $800,000.

And to keep the wheels of justice turning for taxpayers, the U.S. Marshal needs to find new homes for the inmates.

"One of the things we're looking at now are local facilities where we could carve out some amount of space,” Pamerleau says.

She believes the challenge is worth it.

"I'm excited about that area being better utilized for UTSA,” Pamerleau says.

All of these changes will happen by next spring. The county also expects to get some downtown office space from UTSA out of the deal.

- Sounds like someone is judging people who haven't even been to trial yet.

Anyway, I'm glad to see this corporate-owned for-profit jail torn down and replaced by UTSA.

On another note, the building on Google Earth in the link below is on the location of the Continental Hotel residences. It looks historic and certainly worthy of preserving its facade. Does anyone know the details of that?

I haven't read any details. I would be shocked if they tore it down, it's a beautiful building in decent shape. It's an Alfred Giles structure built in the 1890s. It was the subject of a PPP between Weston Urban and the City/County but that deal fell through. It also has a rear parking lot, so maybe that's what they intend to develop.

It's probably way too early for such details yet---but I think there are a couple of historic sites in that area, O' Henry & Casa Navarro for instance, and I'm wondering if these will be moved outright or ceded to become part of the growing UTSA campus? If memory serves, the O' Henry house was moved once before because it used to be at the Lone Star Brewery.

The University of Texas at San Antonio has assembled a design-build team for a planned $43.6 million residential development on its main campus.

Alamo Architects will partner with Treanor HL to lead the design work for Guadalupe Hall, which will house incoming freshmen. The more than 101,000-square-foot building will span four floors and have as many as 360 beds, as well as study and community lounges, community kitchens, laundry rooms, a multipurpose-seminar room and a coffee shop.

UTSA has tapped Intelligent Engineering Services, Shah Smith and Pape-Dawson Engineers Inc. to engineer the new project, which will be built near the intersection of Tobin and Brenan avenues. Whiting-Turner will be the construction manager.

I reported in October that Guadalupe Hall would be part of a series of new housing developments planned for UTSA’s main and downtown campuses to accommodate an increasing enrollment projected to hit 45,000 students by 2028. Those main campus expansion plans also include a mixed-use development called Roadrunner Village.

"Providing more students the opportunity to live on campus — closer to classes, laboratories, libraries, advisers, fellow students and campus amenities — enables greater access to academic and support programs that enhance student success,” UTSA Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs Kimberly Andrews Espy said.

The University of Texas System approved a schematic design for Guadalupe Hall in February. The project is expected to obtain design development approval from the UT System Board of Regents this month.

“Guadalupe Hall will place our freshman in an environment where they can thrive,” UTSA Vice President for Business Affairs Veronica Mendez said.

Construction is slated to begin this fall, with students expected to move in before the fall 2021 semester.

It has that same look as any apartment building in any city in the last 10 years... with red roofs slapped on here and there.

The plan would quadruple the size of the current campus in 10 years, and eventually serve 10,000 students. It would unfold in two phases—the first phase, which is projected to cost north of $300 million, would include the construction of new schools on Dolorosa Street just south of City Hall.

The expansion is being funded by a combination of public money available to UTSA, including from the UT System Board of Regent’s Permanent University Fund, and some philanthropic help, such as $15 million from philanthropist and developer Graham Weston.

We knew this when UTSA first made the expansion announcement last fall.

What’s new in this latest version of the plan is how the second phase—on property west of the existing university campus footprint currently owned by the city—connects to the near West Side via Buena Vista and West Commerce streets. Buena Vista, in particular, would have a pedestrian bridge that runs level with the vehicular bridge that connects downtown with the West Side.

There also looks to be an elevated park that hangs over a street-level promenade, and basketball courts outside a recreation and wellness center that presumably would be available to West Side residents.
