^ Ah yes, that name rings a bell. It's funny that his business plan works so well because the Marlborough is not especially well situated for medical visits, and FN leaders often complain that being downtown for evacuations leads to people succumbing to the lure of drugs and gangs.

What does that say about Downtown if that's the case?

For someone with drug or alcohol issues, sure downtown is going to offer more temptation and opportunity for relapse than being out in the burbs, regardless of the city you're in. But it really rubs me the wrong way how so many chiefs will throw Winnipeg under the bus when trying to lay blame on anyone but themselves for the social problems that exist in their communities. There are already addictions and drug trade on-reserve, whether you want to admit that or not. It's not like people who have never touched a drop check into the Marlborough and go on their very first bender. What does happen pretty frequently is people who have unchecked substance abuse issues, get them into big trouble when they are suddenly thrown into a city full of other people, cops, etc. You can go on a bender for a week in your house up in the northern MB wilderness and nobody notices. You do it on the streets of downtown Winnipeg and it leads to issues. Then the same old refrain from the chiefs that it was evil Winnipeg that corrupted their people...

Tina Fontaine is a great case in point. Her terrible story concluded in Winnipeg but it was mostly the turmoil in her family life, back home on the reserve, that contributed to why she ended up there. But the narrative for many FN people is "See, bad things happen to our people when they go to Winnipeg."

Absolutely nothing.

The Canadian Government has taken the position that two wrongs make a right. The Government did terrible things to the Native population for 100 years. However, since the mid 90s, the Government's answer to reconciliation is to throw money at the Native community, and tell them over and over that they were victims of past injustices.

That is all well, but there comes a point in time where the Native community has to stop living in the past and blaming their current struggles against the powers that be. It's been proven that people who forgive, and take personal accountability for the or their families actions are more successful in life.

Enough with the BS victim culture. Most people have suffered hardships in life to a varying degree. We can either sit around poor and miserable, and blame others for past injustices. Or we can forgive, reach out and heal, and prosper. The World needs more Brian Bowmans and Kevin Chiefs, and less of the Nahanni Fontaines.

To my original point: The Chiefs are being ridiculous. People who are prone to addictions and gangs will find a way to gravitate to that lifestyle, whether they are in Downtown or Tuxedo.

I see the Holiday Inn on Ellice near the airport has converted to a Holiday Inn Express:

If you go back far enough, this was the Airliner.

Cool! I might not know much about engineering and architecture but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express.

The same thing about almost any downtown.

Every good and bad downtown generally has more drug addiction, substances, and all around plight than most other parts of the city.

Nestlé, world's biggest food company, taps Manitoba for plant proteins

New 94,000-square-foot production facility in Winnipeg set to open in fall
CBC News · Posted: Jan 24, 2020 10:41 AM CT | Last Updated: an hour ago

Winnipeg is about to become home to a plant that will supply the world's largest food company with plant-based protein.

Nestlé is partnering with Merit Functional Foods and Burcon NutraScience to supply protein from peas and canola that will be used in food and beverages.

The plant-based protein industry is booming with meat and dairy alternatives being carried by many restaurants and grocery stores, and much of that comes from peas.

There's a big opportunity here for Manitoba. Roquette in Portage is a huge plant and will employee lots of people. This plant by merit, which nestle is partnering with. Are there any lobbying groups, government or otherwise, pushing Manitoba to these type of companies? There should be.

This is an avenue for farmers who are hurting due to the china canola blockade to go in a different direction. Many already farm soybeans, lentils and such.

Many farmers who farm canola also farm pulses in their rotation.

Perhaps this Winnipeg production facility, which is located in Centreport, will help encourage a partner to build the rail facility there? Could ti encourage further growth?

Thieves should be shot, or at least jailed for a very long time. Trust crimes are the worst. That crime used to get you serious time.

Marriott has released their annual list of reward category changes. Courtyard at the airport moves up from a 2 to a 3. Fairfield drops from a 2 to a 1. I have no problem with that. A LARGE number of Alberta and Saskatchewan hotels dropped a category:

According to today’s FP on the NWC announcement re Giant Tiger:

“The company will eliminate almost 25 per cent of the 540 jobs at its head office.

Of the close to 130 positions that will be cut, about 86 people will be laid off and 40 positions will be eliminated through attrition. The layoffs will take place over the next several months.”
