The unique shape of this tower actually has a lot to do with the particular zoning restrictions there.

So this parallels One57 in that both designs show how architects can play with what they're given.
It's IMO something like Iron Chef Gauntlet's five ingredients game.
I remember when NYGuy and I were practically drooling when 53's design first went public. I didn't realize till now how much more than I originally thought these two complement each other.

I don't know whether to hate those zoning regulations or like them. I am curious to see what would be designed if they didn't exist. Would we see more boxes or would we see more adventurous designs everywhere?

Yes and no. This building is actually out of zoning, one of the things that eventually led to the 200 FT hair cut. It's why the other, taller buildings in Midtown are getting built without all of the noise that was generated when this was proposed at 1,250 FT. The conditional approval was both on the account that this tower be cut to 1,050 FT, and the design itself was essentially locked into place by City Planning, which granted the special permit.
But I don't want to relive that sad chapter. And I think the building overall is better proportioned.
Anyway, my favorite view of the tower is down 53rd Street, so excuse me as I take it all in...

If Batman were shot in NY again, this tower would be a welcome feature and add to that "gotham" feel. Just imagine how perfect it would fit in to the image the directors were looking to convey.

This is going to look really good in the skyline....

Please forgive the quick thread-jacking; but some of you do realize that the nifty-galifty looking tower under construction next to the Waldorf-Astoria will ultimately stand a whopping five feet shorter than MetLife/PanAm.
138 West 50th Street, MidTown East. 64 floors, 803'.
Ceruzzi Properties, developers/Pelli Clarke Pelli, architects of record.

Considering tower verre sought its variances something like 8-9 years ago, before the wave of super tall, super thin residential towers- I wonder if the same outcome would have come if they went through the process now. NIMBY's might have been even more obtuse to the idea of this tower as a backlash to all of the other billionaire towers. Or maybe they might have been more comfortable with the height, as it now has many nearby peers.

That bothers me also. They used the "Empire State" building argument to chop the height, but imagine if 432 Park had been built then, let alone the other taller towers that are going up now. But it wasn't meant to be. The building is still gorgeous though.
