the problem is actually a few corporations made billions during the last couple years off the resources in these lands and most of the people who live here have nothing to show for it.

The resources would not have been developed without the risk capital and skill of these companies. If it was so easy, everyone would be doing it, including governments.

With rising costs in healthcare, I think there should be some user fees, as our healthcare system is abused.

It sounds like social services is the fastest growing. With all the different programs out there, it definitely pays not to work if you have kids.

Well obviously people should stop having kids and we should take healthcare away from the poor. Problem solved!

That is exactly what they would run on and win.

Health care systems tend to be bloated with management and red tape. And drug companies. Trim the fat and it is what it is really. Only thing to really reduce healthcare costs is live healthier lives. Even then, things happen.

Once a sales tax was in place, it would be nearly impossible to eliminate it unless there was a prolonged boom period where royalties soared. Alberta has grown by leaps and bounds, and something has to pay for all the necessities that come along with that.

Without a doubt PC/Wildrose would make a show of proposing to reduce a prospective sales tax from, say, 5% to 4% or whatever, but more than anything else they'd probably breathe a sigh of relief that the NDP took the political bullet for them by rolling it out in the first place.

You need a license to do so many things in life, but anyone can spread their legs and pop out so many babies, and taxpayers get to support them? How many people in this country do not pay taxes, but are a drain on our healthcare system? Someone with legit medical issues has to wait because people go to the ER for a f*ckin cold, or people stab each other for beer.

An interesting, although misleading read from a conservative policy think-tank.

Quote:
Residents of Calgary, Regina and Winnipeg, where densification advocates repeatedly condemn their perceived local urban sprawl (a pejorative term for urban dispersion) will doubtless be surprised to know that their population density exceeds that of New York.
Um, the City of New York is far denser than Calgary, Regina and Winnipeg. The author of this report is using some portion of the NY-NJ-CT-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) for the density calculation. This is misleading because that statistical area contains large swaths of New Jersey, Pennsylvania , Connecticut, New York, Long Island, etc. etc. Very misleading characterization. Same goes for Portland, Boston, etc. I have no doubt that Winnipeg is denser than the Tri-State area as a whole, but what does this tell us?

I'm not entirely sure what he's getting at. Urban sprawl is not so bad? Canadian cities are more dense than US cities? Something else?

City and province have no money because everything goes for social services, health care for a segment of the population that eats up way more than their fair share because of unhealthy lifestyle practices and the judicial system including public safety and policing than once again is spent primarily on a certain group that is always on the wrong side of the law!

End of rant!

agree sadly. this is why we can't have nice things! i actually think Manitoba is doing very well considering the social problems we are saddled with.

These comments are racist and offensive and don't belong on this forum. I'm surprised the "moderators" haven't done anything about it.

Sometimes the truth can be offensive. That doesn't change the fact that it's the truth.
