You prompted me to do a retrospective of one of Maldive's old future Toronto skyline renderings from the mid-late aughties (he still posts here, though probably not any future skylines anymore). Behold, Toronto of 2015!

Not too far off from reality, actually.
The big advantage of the 3D models though is that they're a lot more accurate insofar as actual building dimensions go. Photoshopped visualizations in comparison, require a lot of guesswork based on perspective.
The ideal of course, would be to have detailed 3D models rendered within Google maps' interactive 3D view. Which would be a whole lot of work for little to no reward beyond SSP brownie points. Any takers?
