Los Angeles as of March 2 (61 days into 2019):

2019: 31
2018: 42
2017: 48

At this rate (fingers crossed), it will finish the year under 200.

i like the drops in LA and detroit.

chicago is getting in on the drop game too so far this year.

Chicago, total homicides (through 3/12):

2010: 52
2011: 61
2012: 84
2013: 64
2014: 55
2015: 63
2016: 124
2017: 126
2018: 97

2019: 58

drop from last year: 40%

drop from 2017: 54%

it looks like chicago is settling back down into the pre-2016 norm, which would put the city at around 450 - 500 for the year, if that holds.

What exactly happened in 2016? There's no way that jump was random.

it's an unpopular opinion, but i believe that the BLM fallout from the video of the murder of laquan mcdonald being released in late 2015 made a lot of chicago police officers just throw up their hands and say "fuck it, if the black community doesn't want us to police their neighborhoods, then we won't". so policing got a lot less aggressive and the thugs started to take over.

it's bitterly ironic that the black lives matter movement in chicago indirectly lead to the additional deaths of hundreds and hundreds of more young black men.

well, as the giant wound between CPD and chicago's black community slowly heals, the police are doing their job once again.

the murder conviction for van dyke certainly helped. a sense of justice. a sense that the maniac cops who indiscriminately murder young black men in the ghetto that society views as throwaways will be held accountable for their actions.

and the reforms from the consent decree will hopefully continue the healing process.

Chicago does seem to have a unique problem with its police in gang neighborhoods. Sounds like the LA of the 90s.

Steely, I'm also under the impression that several of the major gangs were targeted by the Feds, and the arrests/convictions of many of the "leaders" resulted in a breakdown of only a few large gangs into dozens of smaller ones, leading to major turf wars. If this is correct, I'd say it's a huge reason behind the spike in crime numbers for 2016, along with the subsequent drop-off as the battles wound down.

Montreal is at 5 for the area patrolled by the Montreal police (2 million people) + 2 more if you include the suburbs (4.3M total population)

Los Angeles as of March 9 (68 days into 2019):

2019: 34
2018: 47
2017: 50

So an average of one homicide every other day, which means we’re currently on track for 182-83 to end the year. The homcide rate will most likely pick up speed as the weather warms up, but the numbers are encouraging (yet still far too many).
