I love it. CCRA, eat shit.

You had a chance for a slimmer, smaller project with a better parking ratio. HA HA now look what you get!!!! I bigger, denser, taller project with more apartments. I LOOOOVVVVVEEE IT!!!!!

Shows what can happen when you become so pigheaded you forget the law of unintended consequences. Fuckers.

Stupid question: where does one find the text of L&I permits online? Is it this site:

http://lti.planphilly.com/

Because if it is, I'm having a hard time finding this latest permit through that site.

Height increase? Awesome!

Now that the Boyd's auditorium is (unfortunately) gone, I hope everyone can look ahead at what a transformative project this can be. Personally, I love that some care went into the design and that it's not another flat, glass curtain, and that it tries to blend into the Art Deco facade of the theater.

Hopefully this will be on the next CDR meeting in May. There should be some good things coming up soon, including this and W hotel details.

Not sure if it's been mentioned yet, but if Pearl builds the tower to be situated behind 1920 Chestnut, the south facing condos should have views straight into Rittenhouse square, at least until something is built on the Castleway lot

Wow, this demo is endless. That thing is a fortress.

Any experts out there know why this is taking so long? At this rate this thing won't be demo'd till Christmas.

I'm no expert but I think it's very safe to say that the demo is proceeding at a glacial pace due to the very unique nature of the demolition of the building itself. Remember the entire Boyd is not being demolished, the front facade, foyer, the entire lobby and the easternmost portion of the theater itself are all being preserved. They are only demoing about 3/4 of the theater.

Any situation in which only a portion of a building is being demo'd makes for a delicate and slow process because throughout the demolition, care needs to be taken that the structural integrity is maintained for the preserved section of the building. This should be an even more challenging project with the Boyd considering how ornate the interior is that they are attempting to preserve. Also, let's not forget that as it currently stands, that interior is already in a state of disrepair and probably cannot withstand much disruption.

This is going to be a challenging demolition, we might as well all sit tight, this should take awhile.

Ugh, I thought my grief period for the Boyd was over, but that last photo is so sad. I really wish I had lived here when the Sam Eric was open. I mean kudos on the photo, but it's depressing to see that old theater facing sunlight.

Yeah, no kidding. Reminds me of the beginning of the Phantom of the Opera:

(Note so nobody gets confused: The first picture in this post is the Boyd. The second one is from the set of the Phantom of the Opera movie adaptation)

Wow. I am for this development. There just wasn't sufficient financing and adequate interest to restore the property properly or return it to use as a theater. But it is still sad to lose this. These pictures are stunning.

I saw quite a few movies there, it was a unique place to see a movie. Unfortunately it was falling apart 20 years ago. Leaking ceilings, dirty carpet, peeling paint, etc.

Whoa!

It really is a shame. The Boyd didn't look like the best, but it was certainly the last movie palace. I think the Center City market could have certainly managed to support at least one boutique movie theater. Oh well, shoulda, coulda, woulda. I'm excited to see the high-rise here and how they adapt the Boyd's lobby, but I would have loved to see Rocky Horror there.
