If it's a water tower left over from the steam age which as far as I know it is, then I would imagine it's owned by DB and is a listed monument?

It is a listed monument could be something from the city aswell...

I've noticed the demolition has begun of the outer railroadtracks next to the Kynastbrücke but I havent seen any plans how the new bridge is going to look like.

hmm I find it really pity that they reduced the size of the Spreedreieck that much. A new highrise in Mitte would have been great.

But still I think that the area around the Bhf Friedrichstraße will stay my favourite in Berlin =) I love that place.

What about the Sonae-Hochhaus? Any news? I mean last time as I was at the Alexa-Mall it did not really seem like there is still enough space for a highrise - at least not at the Alexanderplatz-corner

Zoo ferris wheel

Where exactly is this wheel to be built at the Zoo?

Here's an article in German about the university wanting the wheel to be blocked from being built as they argue they may wabt to expand more buildings into this area!

The official name is "World Wheel"
maybe with a small smile facing london and its London Eye? ^^

btw I don't think that the Technical University will be able to stop the construction since the area belongs to the Zoo and not the university

Personally I am not a fan of those wheels who are constructed and proposed.
It has nothing special to add to a city.

A demolition of the Fernsehturm would be better and replace it with a more daring construction than that awful concrete shaft who is so ugly no words can be found fore to discribe its boringness.

To give an example: look what is U/C in Canton, China , this is what BLN needs not some stupid ferris wheel

I agree, the whole area south of the Alex should be developed to fit in with the future development plans of the Molkenmarkt!

I would also love to see all those commy blocks being demolished from East of the Alexanderplatz up to Strasburgerplatz!

And all those commy blocks at Fischerinsel and along Leipziger strasse should also be torn down!

Hmm I completely disgree to that. The Fernsehturm is an awesome building in my opinion. The way it looks in the city, like a huge needle, is fabulous to me. And most inhabitants of Berlin recognize the Fernsehturm as most popular landmark.

I do agree that these Plattenbauten ( those low-wealth flat-blocks ) are mostly ugly. But there are also different examples:


Most buildings on the water front are built in this way.


Plus it was simply the most popular architectue after WW2, in East Germany asweel as West Germany and also around the whole world.

I do also think that those ferry wheel do in fact add something special to a city. In my opinion even more than "just another highrise out of steel and glass"

And isn't the large amount of different architecture stlye Berlin got the thing which makes the city special? In my opinion it is.
I like it much more than thoese "everything-looks-the-same"-cities like for example Paris.

The U55 Shuttle Line from Hauptbahnhof to the Brandenburg Gate




Various versions of a new east-west line through Berlin have been under discussion since 1919. The extension of Berlin’s U5 metro line is not a new idea in terms of planning. When the city was divided after World War II, connecting the eastern and western parts of the city was suddenly no longer a possibility. This changed only with reunification.

Under the current transport policy of the Berlin Senate, the U5 metro line, which currently connects eastern districts from Hönow to Mitte with the eastern city centre, is to be extended to Hauptbahnhof. The decision for this extension was made in the early 1990s, and the project will be carried out in two parts (Hauptbahnhof to Pariser Platz and Pariser Platz to Alexanderplatz). The tunnel structure between Hauptbahnhof and Pariser Platz has already been built, as part of the extensive building work for the government district, and plans to complete construction were finalised in 1999. Work on closing the gap between Pariser Platz and Alexanderplatz will start in 2010 at the latest.

When the metro station at the Brandenburg Gate is completed, transport can begin on the first section. As part of the major U5 line, this section will be given the provisional name of U55.

The Berlin Transport Authority (Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe – BVG) is the largest municipal transport company in Germany. The BVG will open the U55 metro shuttle line in 2006. It is also the contractor for the construction work, commissioned by the Urban Planning Office of the State of Berlin. Funding will be provided by the state and federal governments.



Spatial and Temporal Dimensions of the Construction Work

Main construction site
The main construction site will be located on Unter den Linden between Pariser Platz and Wilhelmstrasse, facing the Adlon Hotel.

Logistics tunnel
A second part of the construction site will be located on the central promenade of Unter den Linden, between the Polish Embassy and the Bundestag administrative offices.

A tunnel will be built there to supply the materials for construction work. It will later be used as the second access to the station, in order to meet current fire protection standards.



Construction phase 1

Traffic : removal of the urban rail (S-Bahn) passageway

Demolition of S-Bahn passageway ,approx. 2200 sqm (66 m x 32 m)

“Open construction site” Moderate noise pollution, within legal limits Dust generation reduced by sprinkling & Removal of excavated earth
