The Goldman Sachs Tower is pretty freakin tall but yet, the woolworth building in the older skyline shots looked much taller than GSH building.

Well that's been the case since the 60's. The pre-60's skyline (in Midtown as well) was more classic, but the demands for office space were different at that time. These days, if you see a slender tower like the Woolworth or 40 Wall rising, it's most likely for residential use. I think in a sense the "fattening" of the Manhattan skyline may have echoed the city's shift from manufacturing to white collar.
