Whitecaps have acquired Canadian forward Lucas Cavallini from Puebla for a club-record transfer fee. Rumoured fee was between $6-7M.

Hopefully will help put the ball in the net. Something we can barely do match to match.

MLS now at 30 teams when expanded thru to 2022 with the addition of Charlotte. Gonna be harder for either of the other two Canadian teams to ever have a shot at the championship mathematically speaking. Not that they were ever close when the league was at 18 teams when the Caps joined.

I'm sure Acajack will be interested in this:

Impact signed Haitian Steeven Saba and provided a tweet in Haitian Creole, or at least partly attempted to.

Gwo! Mwen kontan!

But only the first word (Byenveni) is in Haitian Creole. The rest is in standard French.

L'Impact advanced to the next round of the Concacaf Champions League with a 0-0 draw against Saprissa of Costa Rica last night. Montreal won on away goals.

Disappointing crowd of just over 21,000 at the Big O. The ominous weather forecast and the storm starting up before game time probably dug into ticket sales in the days before and the walk-up crowd too.

(That and some people may have been concerned about snow on the stadium roof.)

I don't really see this as a disappointing crowd - midweek game, relatively unknown opponent, with home opener a few days later. We'll see how the crowd shakes out on the weekend I guess.

Montreal gets the winner of Seattle/Olimpia in the next round, the latter of whom qualified through the 2019 CONCACAF League. They beat Forge en route to qualifying.

We using this thread for this season?

TFC will be disappointed with how that game ended - albeit with a fantastic free-kick goal.

21k was the attendence at the big O today for the MLS season opener as well.

There is nothing wrong with that number especially since this is higher than anything we had last year.

It's low for a game at Olympique but given the 20K midweek against Saprissa it's probably fine. Equivalent to a Saputo sellout.

Nice win for Impact, TFC game felt like a loss with the late goal, and Caps still have major problems but look moderately better. The CPL's first ever player to play in MLS (Waterman) got his first MLS assist too.

Considering the team was a joke last year and we lost our franchise player and best player to ever wear the Impact's uniform (Piatti) a couple weeks ago, 21k was more than respectable. More people will come when the team shows they can win on a regular basis.

I guess you guys are right. I was kind of used to them getting just under 30k *(27k, 29k) at least for games at the Big O. Which we have seen in the past.

Short-Term Losses Aside, MLS Poised To Come Out of Sports Hiatus a ‘Winner'

"Howie Long-Short: While Coronavirus has decimated soccer leagues around the world (see: fears +/- half of Bundesliga teams could be forced into bankruptcy), MLS’ single-entity structure - which includes a salary cap and no promotion/relegation - has the domestic soccer outfit on firm footing. The existence of salary cap has made it so that team payrolls are manageable (at least relative to other top flight leagues around the world) and without the threat of relegation, MLS has been able to lure deep pocketed club owners capable of weathering an unexpected economic downturn (soccer teams are simply far less attractive investment options when a single bad season on the pitch can tank revenues). Requiring expansion franchises to build new soccer specific venues has also proven beneficial during the current shutdown. With +/- 90% of clubs playing in team-owned buildings, rent-related concerns are far and few between (NYCFC, Nashville SC and FC Cincinnati are the exceptions)."

Changing the name won't help the team earn higher revenues. They are dead last or nearly dead last in that category. Unless the owner manages to get his $100 million in improvements to the stadium in the next 5 - 10 years (with a substantial assist from the province and city) he will likely sell the team to US interests and the team will relocate to a city/private owner that is willing to build them a proper stadium.

Vanney is leaving TFC. I wonder if he hadn't voluntarily left he would have been fired? Disappointing end to the season for TFC considering how well they played during the regular season.

You said the same thing nearly verbatim two years ago and I don't really think the situation has changed all that much.

Saputo's probably rebranding the team to get ahead of potential CPL expansion into Quebec. There's been rumours CPL is eyeing two Quebec-based teams in the near future with one of them having an FC Montreal/Montreal FC moniker.
