Sitting Liberal MHA Loses Nomination

VOCM News
Aug 20, 2015

Quote:
Another sitting MHA on the Liberal side has failed to win the nomination.

St. Barbe MHA Jim Bennett didn't go after the nomination on the Northern Peninsula, leaving it open for MHA Chris Mitchelmore.

Instead, he tried to become the candidate in Lewisporte-Twillingate. However, the party says another Bennett, Derek, will carry the Liberal banner in Lewisporte-Twillingate.

http://www.vocm.com/newsarticle.asp?...56797&latest=1

Looks like there isn't many more districts left for nomination. This could be a big blow to the Liberals as I would suspected Jim Bennett would've held a senior cabinet position - pending the outcome of the election of course.

I'd imagine the Liberals are delighted to see him go.

Well he lasted 3 months as Liberal leader in 2006 and the man is an idiot. This is a guy who used a holocaust reference to describe the fishery and talked about how we're living in a police state. He was going to "vilify" Joan Shea on open line because the people in her department were "idiots" and made sexist remarks about Judy Manning.

Well, when you put it that way maybe it's more of a relief than a shock for them.

Recently city council sent letters to the party leaders asking them to state their positions on a variety of issues. The topics were:

Fiscal Equality in Property Taxation and Fee Payments
Repurposing Fallow, Brownfield Provincial Lands and Provincial Vacant Spaces
Partnerships in Housing
Modernizing our Legislation
Community Services – Regional Perspectives
Capital Works Funding
Enforcing Provincial Legislation
Electronic Ticketing
Special Purpose Property Legislation
Team Gushue Highway Construction & Transition Issues

The questions can be found here.
http://stjohns.ca/media-release/coun...incial-leaders

Thoughts on what issues the provincial government should be focusing on when it comes to the city, the metro are to municipalities in general?

Just heard Dwight Ball on OpenLine. It's amazing that people are ready to send him to the premier's office.

Jim Lester - Farmer Jim - is expected to seek the Progressive Conservative nomination in Mount Pearl Southlands. He'll take on Paul Lane if he wins the nomination, should be an interesting race.

The quality of people in the pool of provincial politicians seems low...

Due to this and the fact there is a federal election happening a month before, I'm predicting one of the lowest voter turnouts in history.

I like Paul Davis, too bad he has all the PC baggage to drag along with him.

Dwight Ball seems like he doesn't have a clue what to do. The pool of liberal candidates is mostly former-PCs or NDP anyway.

The crop of Liberal candidates is very disappointing. They had some good names come out early on but for the most part they're light on talent. While some members of the current cabinet aren't that impressive they're still getting the job done. While they may be poling low I think at the end of the day the PCs will probably put forth a stronger team of candidates than the Liberals.

Maybe I am being too cynical but it seems that the majority of the electorate doesn’t really weigh the pros and cons of one platform, or leader or individual candidate against the other, they vote based on the past and not for the future.

A party could run a slate of Rhodes scholars but if the electorate doesn’t like their leader they probably won’t form the government. Despite the fact that our democracy is based on the election of local candidates (and very few actually get to vote for the leader of the party) people do tend to vote based on the party that they think can do the most for them, or NOT do the most TO them.

I agree to an extent. The party leader is the biggest draw in NL but I think candidates also play a role, maybe more so out of St. John's.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danny_Dumaresque

He was last elected in 1993 (yes, 22 years ago). He has lost 3 subsequent elections, plus a nomination bid in Labrador and then a leadership race for leader of the Liberal party.

2 leadership bids. He ran in that weird race after Yvonne Jones quit.

The PCs announced today that Beth Crosbie - the daughter of John and Jane - will be their candidate in Virginia Waters Pleasnatville. She said on the news that John has volunteered to go door to door with her, but she told him they wouldn't get very far if he did!
