They have been for about 4 years now.

The plan when I worked there up until January was to move the furniture from the 5th floor to the basement which would leave two whole floors open. They were also condensing children's wear on the 2nd floor but I don't know if there was a plan with what to do with the space. They did move the customer service desk from the 5th floor to the 2nd. And they are no longer carrying hardware in the basement.

The basement needs some fixing up though before the furniture department would be appropriate down there. I think it would be too expensive though and I doubt they'll end up doing it.

I think it's inevitable that the Bay will go out of business in the next decade or two. I just hope The Bay downtown building is left intact.

We'll see. Their new CEO is doing some great things and bringing some amazing brands into the company. Have you seen The Room in Toronto? They're also overhauling all their flagship stores in the next couple of years. Just today I got an email about a new brand coming to Polo Park.

Unfortunately Winnipeg seems to be the last city to get some attention. If they keep moving in this direction they should be fine but they need to move faster.

It's a $5 million revamp of the St. Regis Room. They've also brought in more high end designers.

The Globe and Mail article is great. Here are a few others if you're interested.

Here's another interesting tidbit about the direction The Bay will be taking. They are also focusing on their Signature Line. The first product that came out in most stores was black skinny women's pant priced at $49 I believe. They came out in late fall and sold out almost immediately. They are nearly impossible to find now so I guarantee you these items will be one the shelves soon.

Wal-mart expanding on Regent avenue
CJOB News Team reporting
3/17/2010

Wal-Mart is proposing to expand and convert its existing location on Regent Avenue into a Super Center concept including a full line of groceries.

CJOB News has learned an application was made to the City of Winnipeg to expand the Crossroads Station by 30,000 square feet and create two main entrances.

It will mean more competition in the city in the lucrative grocery sector.

Wal-Mart has opened more than 80 supercenters in Canada including two in Saskatchewan -- one last month in Regina and the month before in Saskatoon..

Until they attract a Wal-Mart near the University area along bison drive, the Superstore will always still be a good place to shop for students in years to come! I don't foresee this one closing down anytime soon.

Same goes for the Superstore Sargent location. There's a Walmart (albeit not the 'supercenter' version), Costco and new Safeway in the area and it's still busy.

Hardly. There are many Superstores adjacent to Walmart Supercentres in other Canadian provinces, and they are not anywhere close to being "done". They co-exist in peace with eachother. It just provides shoppers with more alternatives. It's not like Winnipeg is some one horse town. As shitty as I believe the quality of food at a wallyworld supercentre is, it provides shoppers with alternatives to what is out there. It's a healthy sign of free market entreprise. The more, the merrier I say. Let the market dictate what succeeds and what fails.

You won't have to worry about that. Walmarts tend to build on the outskirts of cities, at least in Canada. Areas like Osborne and Marion are safe from the effects of Walmart.
