2024 Summer Olympics in Portland?

2024 Summer Olympics in Portland? USOC is asking

Quote:
The U.S. Olympic Committee is asking Portland, Seattle and 33 other cities if they are interested in bidding to host the 2024 Summer Games.

The USOC sent letters to the mayors of those cities Tuesday to gauge interest in a potential bid to bring the Summer Olympics back to the country for the first time since 1996.
Never gonna happen... but... it's an interesting thought to ponder.

Just in case anyone didn't know, Portland had previously attempted in 1962 to host the '68 games.

Wow. Having an NFL class stadium would have probably drastically changed the course of Portland.

Thanks for linking to that. It was an interesting read.

The Olympics have become more of a liability lately with extraordinary costs involved. Oregon is just too small to host without significant federal assistance. And where would we put it without needlessly tearing up the urban fabric? It was so hard to find a space for a minor league baseball team that it finally left. I can't imagine a giant arena!

That said, it would be a great excuse to improve the transit system here... Build a subway through downtown, improve rail connections between Eugene and Portland.. Obviously we'd have to exclude Clackamas County, which would refuse to pay for anything.

Perhaps a winter olympics would be more appropriate since we could use Mt. Hood?

We'd need to add about 19,000 hotel rooms to really be considered for the Summer Games. We only have about 26,000 now. I'm not sure if 26,000 would be enough to even be considered for the winter games.
