I think the administration should develop Dambel busstop as main access point. People can walk a distance of about 500 meters through the bridge on Dambel-Kodikal rivulet to the river festival event ground. It is easy to extend bus service upto Dambel-Kodikal rivulet bridge.

MANGALURU: The Airports Authority of India’s Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) is emerging as one of the fastest growing airports in southern India. MIA has seen a 30% growth of passenger traffic since the last one year.

The number passengers handled in this airport has gone up to 23.4 lakh during 2017-18 as against 17.5 lakh in 2016-17. The current number of flight operations per day is more than 60 and is likely to cross 80 in the coming months.

Vasamsetti Venkateswara Rao, airport director, MIA told TOI that AAI has already taken up major expansion of terminal building to help cope with the projected increase in flight movements that will also see a resultant increase in passenger traffic. “We are enhancing area of terminal building by 1.5 times of its existing area in the coming years,” Rao said, adding these works are in advanced tender stage and will be awarded shortly with an estimated execution time of 18 months.

The parallel taxi track phase-I commissioning has increased runway handling capacity from 10 flights per hour to 14 flights per hour, Rao said, adding with the commissioning of parallel taxi track phase-II, the runway handling capacity will further increase to 17 flights per hour and this will add to the enhanced aircraft movement. AAI has also undertaken major safety enhancement projects by increasing the width of runway side basic strip from 75 metres to 150 metres.

While two passenger boarding bridges are being added in the coming months, two more passenger boarding bridges will be built along with the (terminal) expansion project, Rao said. MIA is going to further add three more parking bays for aircraft, which will aid the projected rise in traffic movement and passenger growth. New enhanced facilities like airport surveillance and monopulse secondary surveillance radars and DVOR have been installed and commissioned.

In the last year, many new passenger friendly facilities have been introduced in MIA such as tag-less baggage clearance, silent airport, sanitary napkin vending machines in women’s restroom, re-furnished child care room with baby cradle and prams, Rao said.

Besides, passengers are being welcomed in the terminal with the famous Mangaluru jasmine fragrance through automatic dispenser machines installed in various locations in the terminal, Rao said.

New state-of-the-art and advanced air navigation aids and advanced security system are being introduced in Mangaluru International Airport, according to S. Sreekumar, Regional Executive Director, Airports Authority of India (AAI), Chennai.

Addressing presspersons here on Friday, he said that the airport would have advanced instrument landing system (ILS), radar and Doppler VHF omni-directional radio range (DVOR) navigational aids. It would have threat containment vehicle to handle bombs and central air traffic flow management (CATFM) facility.

He said that the AAI has proposed to widen the safety basic strip of the runway and construct part parallel taxi track in the second phase at an estimated cost of Rs. 121 crore. It required about 36 acres of land from the State government. The AAI is yet to get land and negotiations for getting it were on.

When this project was completed, the runway flight handling capacity would be increased from 10 flights an hour to 20. Widening the basic strip of the runway would enhance the safety of air operation to international standard.

Mr. Sreekumar said that three more aircraft parking bays would be built in the airport at an estimated cost of Rs. 7 crore. It would help provide night parking facilities to airlines at the airport.

He said that when the expansion of the terminal building is completed, the arrival hall would be on the basement at the car parking level. The elevated level would be reserved for passengers leaving the city.

A horrible example for bus shelter is in front of currently built St Agnes Junction bus stop. Three steps to claim! Why don't keep the longitudinal slope intact and level with footpath while designing bus stops? Get rid of lateral slope, retain longitudinal slope. Just create benches with varying leg heights on them, if slope is too much then put chairs with varying leg heights. Best way is to keep roads flat near bus stops & junctions. One way to provide rain protection in current design is to put retractable tranaparent shutters on three sides for protection during rainy season or even tarpaulin for current design. Another way may be to increase length and width of roof by constructing extended PVC roofs. (Shop keepers for protection from rain and sun put additional plastic roofs in front with all types of acrobatic ways to turn pedestrian into acrobats to dodge rain water falling from roofs). Ideal bus stop roof should even extend over halted buses so that people can move in and out without getting soaked in rain. Just do it with light plastic material & have suitable process to recycle plastic.

My best suggestion is to generate about 20 MW electricity on top of bus shelters. For this what you need is solar canopy on busstops extending from compound wall to medians of roads further longitudinally on both sides canopy should extend by three to four meters. This makes it difficult for rain to enter to region where people are waiting for buses. People can enter/exit bus easily during rain without affected by it. (Shelters can be extended further to autorikshaw stands but at a smaller height and shelter/walkway of it stretchng below into main bus shelter). Busstops should be covered in between with transparent sheets so to provide natural light during day. Also provide natural ventilation may be using air turbines. Just see that no tree canopies will extend over busstop canopy so to affect solar power generation capacity. And design should be so that shelters can be dismounted and remounted easily during any road alteration works like expansion. All solar panels should be connected to main power grid. I think State Bank, Lady Goschen, Town Hall - AB Shetty Circle, Jyothi, Kankanady can all together can generate about 1 MW of solar power. There are also enough government lands in vicinity in these places to keep inverters. The canopies may look like petrol bunk canopies with same height. Height restriction barriers can be used at entrances. Rain water should directly flow into drains through pipes without getting on way of pedestrians. On national highways for even solar panels on service roads there could be height requirements. As we know NMPT is looking for space to generate solar power. Even KIOCL, MRPL may be requested/blackmailed for help.

Actually my design for bus stop requires lot of land acquistion for making it multimode with rikshaw & bicycle parking facilties & cycle tracks & I know MCC is never going to do it. And people representative will continue to put big banners with their photographs on footpaths encroached for autostands.

Admitting that a robust public transport system would address traffic woes to a considerable extent, Mr. Senthil said attempts are being made to introduce an organised city bus operation system. As a first step, administration has initiated colour-coding of buses and development of an app to get feedback from commuters. The concept would be taken forward to have a PPP for city bus operations.

People have almost forgotten the vast river front abutting the city, Mr. Senthil said, noting that all roads would henceforth lead to the river front.

The very idea behind organising the River Festival on January 12 and 13 was to attract people to the river and tap the tourism potential too.

As people stopped going to river fronts, rivers got polluted with trash and waste water. The administration has urged the government to construct at least 20 floating concrete jetties between Kuloor Bridge and Netravathi Bridge on Phalguni (Gurupura) and Netravathi rivers. Many people are waiting to introduce house boats, floating restaurants and ferry services if boat landing facilities are provided by the government, he said.

Pumpwell will be last option for bus terminal, MCC clarifies

What news trying to mean is there is a plan for centralization and decentralization at the same time. Centralizaton is done by having bus terminal near railway station so two modes are integrated. Decentralization by having separate bus terminal for Moodbidri, Karkal, BC Road buses. This means there will be partial integration of buses with trains.

Mangaluru does not need decentralization of service/moffusil buses at this point as population is less. As per MCC plans also population will not cross 20 lakhs till another 30 years or so (my plan is 20 laks for Mangalore, 10 lakhs in between Mangaluru & Udupi, 10 lakhs Udupi around 2050 - a corridor type metro city Mangaluru being a part of this metro city - a metro city with three terminals - Mangaluru, Udupi and one more inbetween integrated with airport terminal). For a huge city with population more than a crore like the parched city decentralization was fine to accommodate more buses running in road of less capacity. To accommodate more buses that city had to either increase capacity of roads by building 10-20 lane roads or decentralization. (Ideally I was given a chance then would have preferred to decentralize:lol: this city itself by dividing it into three or four pieces, that is three or four cities separated by at least 150 km. By doing this I would have stuck to my principle of 'one city - one integrated terminal' may be by having 8 lane roads for population of 40 lakhs). But in Mangaluru having six lane roads are enough to accommodate buses. At the same time we have to discourage personal vehicles so that roads are free for buses. If integrated transportation hub is built for accommodating both buses and railways then outsiders travelling through this hub can exchange buses or trains easily without need to travel in small vehicles from one terminal to another terminal. Ideal plan for a city of 20 lakh population is to have integrated city bus, service bus and train services by discouraging personal vehicles.

I don't know what is this satellite bus stops business. If Padil Transportation Hub provide connection to every place with good frequency in both modes I will be happy to have satellite bus stops as supplementary bus stops. If they stop buses from Udupi at Kuloor without allowing them to proceed further to Padil & Pumpwell then I oppose this. Ideal case could be buses from Udupi being split into two groups one going to Padil directly via Kuloor-Nanthoor and one going via Kuloor to Pumpwell in different routes some may travel via Jyothi (say with frequency of one bus in 20 minutes at least) to Pumpwell and viceversa. In future this can be split further in to two to take Kuloor-Carstreet-StateBank-Jyothi-Pumpwell route also with good frequency in addition to Kuloor-BuntsHostel-Kadri-Pumpwell route when Carstreet-StateBank route is widened. Simliarly to Puttur at least 30 minutes frequency could be provided via Jyothi. In this way you are reducing traffic density at Hampankatta & Jyothi area of service/mofussil buses but without effecting direct connectivity to Udupi & Puttur much. At the same time you can stop any long distance bus to cross pumpwell and enter CBD. I don't have objection if the government stops all long distance buses at Pumpwell or Padil itself.

Taking all these factors into consideration, wildlife conservationist and architect Niren Jain has decided to make an intra-city motor vehicle-free safe bicycle lane map within Mangaluru City.

Niren Jain told BM, "About six months ago, I launched an experiment of mapping non-motorised lanes. I have realised that there are quite a few lanes that can be used as a dedicated cycling lane. There could be some crossovers along the main road, bridges or nalas. Some interventions might be needed from civic authorities.Cycling clubs often dedicate themselves to reaching milestones or means to stay fit and exercise during a holiday or early morning or late evenings. I want to use cycling for regular commute and have been wondering how to do it as road are totally unsafe in the absence of dedicated tracks. There is hardly anyone who uses cycle for regular commute.”

For Niren, the exercise looks really promising. “The initiative is still at its preliminary stage and we need to take it forward with the support from Mangaluru City Corporation. Launched six months ago, I have mapped lanes on and off whenever time allowed. Certain issues such as gradient slopes have to be examined as Mangaluru basically has a hilly terrain. We could probably cut off from one point where we need to go. The focus would be on high-density areas connecting work or education institutes to residential areas.

The moment parents feel that the routes are safe for cyclists, we would probably see a rise in the use of cycles for daily commute. Whenever, I have gone on this exercise, I have realised that it is a totally different Mangaluru that I am exploring even though I have lived in Mangaluru for several years,” he said. Niren is already in discussion with Smart City officials to take this up as a full-fledged project for as part of smart city. If that happens, can come up with a comprehensive report at the earliest. “There is a need to look at several alternative routes to make it a permanent aspect of the city,“ he said.

The existing Truck Parking Terminal (TPT) near New Customs House in Panambur is already crammed with trucks. Nethravathi river basin under severe stress: Report

Unplanned developmental path adopted by the decision-makers is threatening the Nethravathi river basin in the ecologically sensitive Western Ghat region, according to a technical report by a team of researchers from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc).

The river has a catchment area of 4409 sq km covering the districts of Chikmagaluru, Hassan, Kodagu, Dakshina Kannada and Udupi in Karnataka.

Grave threats

The report titled ‘Carrying capacity of Nethravathi river basin based on ecological sensitiveness’ is prepared by Ramachandra TV, Bharath Setturu, and Vinay S of the Energy and Wetlands Research Group, under the Centre for Ecological Sciences of IISc.

It said that river diversions, hydro electric projects, coastal reservoirs, commercial plantations and unscientific tourism would cause irreplaceable loss of rich biodiversity in the river basin.

(This report assumes significance as the Karnataka government has initiated a project to divert water from the west-flowing water sources, including Yettinaholey stream, in Sakleshpur taluk of Hassan district to several districts in south eastern parts of the state. Yettinaholey is one of the tributaries of west-flowing Nethravathi River -- the lifeline of Dakshina Kannada district.)

The report said that rivers and streams in the ecologically-sensitive regions should not be diverted or manipulated as it would affect the water retention capability of the catchment and ground recharge potential.

“This would affect the sustenance of water in the streams. This would also affect the downstream users’ right for adequate freshwater,” it said, adding that the salinity ingression in freshwater as a result of diversion would deprive the downstream dwellers of freshwater and livelihood.

Forests with innumerable streams in the Western Ghats offer tremendous potential for carbon stocking per unit area while also bettering the hydrology of these mountains that form the main watershed for the entire Indian peninsula.

Loss of forest cover

The report said the area under forest cover stood at 51.67 per cent in the Nethravathi river basin after losing a significant patch of forests for mini-hydroelectric and infrastructure projects.

The plantations constitute 26.42 per cent of the river basin. Large tracts of forests were replaced with exotic species of mono-culture plantations, it said, adding that the market interventions in agriculture, through commercial plantations, have resulted in the encroachment of forests.

Nethravathi river basin has 433 villages in Chikmagaluru, Hassan, Kodagu. Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts of Karnataka. These villages are classified under four ecologically sensitive regions (ESR). The report said that ESR 1 represented the zone of highest conservation where no further degradation is allowed. ESR 2 is a zone of higher conservation, and this zone forms a transition for highest conservation.

As many as 111 villages come under ESR 1 and 69 villages under ESR 2. The report said that these villages are to be strictly no-go area with respect to developments.

The report was released by Ramachandra TV at a conference on ‘Sustainable management of global water resources: Need and challenges’ at Alva’s Education Foundation in Moodbidri of Dakshina Kannada on Friday.

Overexploitation of water for monoculture has altered some of the perennial streams in the ghats of the Netravathi river basin to intermittent streams coming in the way of perennial nature of the Netravathi, according to a study report by a team of researchers of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru.

The swamp ecosystem in the basin, spread over 4,409 sq km in 11 taluks in Chikkamagaluru, Hassan, Kodagu, Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts, is under higher threat due to horticulture expansion and land conversion for other development activities, it said.

The report “Carrying capacity of Netravathi river basin based on the ecological sensitiveness” has said that soil depth and texture decided the water holding capacity in the catchment. The Netravathi catchment is dominated by clayey soils which have fewer pores due to which infiltration capability is very low but have higher water holding capacity which supports larger vegetation and keeps the rivers perennial in natural condition. Soils are moderately deep to very deep in nature. Ghats and transition zones of the Netravathi is dominated by deep soils with sparse moderate deep soils.

“The presence of deeper soils with clayey content in the ghats have higher retention capacity during post monsoons and summer keeping the Netravathi perennial. But over exploitation of water for monoculture has altered some of the perennial streams to intermittent streams,” the report said. The 203-page report by the Energy and Wetlands Research Group (EWRG), the Centre for Ecological Sciences (CES), IISc, released on Friday has been prepared by T.V. Ramachandra, co-ordinator, EWRG-CES, Bharath Setturu and Vinay S., researchers.

Referring to the forest cover of 2016 in the basin, it said that the area under forests stood at 51.67 % after losing significant green patch for mini-hydroelectric, infrastructure projects and monoculture plantations. The plantations constituted 26.42 % of the basin.

Large tracts of forests have been replaced with monoculture plantations such as acacia, eucalyptus, rubber, teak, coffee, cocoa, and arecnaut plantations.

The report remarked that the existing exotics should be replaced with endemic species. Community-based conservation approach in ecologically sensitive regions (ESR) of II and ESR III would help in the conservation of biological diversity, the report said.

It also includes repair of roads damaged during the pipeline work and shifting of utility lines. After the project is complete, every household will be connected with Class-B multijet water meter.

The DPR also proposes changes to the design of 81.7 MLD filter house and sludge management system. It also proposes to use SCADA technology for computerising Thumbe purification unit to all the water storage units.

Salient features

All the residents in 60 wards of the MCC will get 24X7 water once the Jalasiri project is implemented. The responsibility, operation and maintenance of the water supply system will be handed over to a contractor for eight yearsafter the implementation. New pipelines and parallel pipelines to the existing ones will be laid.

A pressure relief valve will be installed for the distribution lines. The height of overhead tanks will be increased to 15 metre from 12 metre, 18 metre from 15 metre, 20 metre and 22.5 metre from 18 metre.

The design of the overhead tank will be changed to shaft type from column type.

The design of the drinking water line will be changed and 900 mm MS pipes will be laid from Daddalkadu to Kulooru Bridge covering a distance of 2-km, officials said.

While ADB is releasing Rs 218.5 crore, the balance will be raised through Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation (KUIDFC).

Mangaluru’s population which is 5,54,183 now, is expected to touch 10,33,778 in 2046. At present, 160 MLD water is pumped from Thumbe daily and will increase to 236.60 MLD water per day by 2046.

Sometimes 'secular forces' and sometimes 'communal forces' are having upper hand in moral policing war zone. What we should see is overall by adding up all previous years it is balanced fight. Don't dig deep into history to know who started moral policing? Every tribe in history has tried to protect itself from outsiders influence including still existent Jarawa of Andaman. Religious behaviour are just offshoot of tribal behaviour to prove that they are supreme & their God is supreme! For that matter even liberal tribes, rationlist tribes and every other kind of modern tribes exhibit same behaviour but means may be different as they have plenty of resources (you can call these tribes by Karl Marx terminology as bourgeoisie class because they have better means). Those who don't have any other means to exhibit their anger use manual force. There is also intellectuals tribe to earn their living classifying moral police as 'criminals' or 'religious' depending upon whether 'communal forces' or 'secular forces' carried out moral policing strikes! What all types of tribes we have!

There was all three communities with their political leaders fighting to name a road after their community icons. A community wanted the road to be named after a bank's founder. And then there was protest for the same bank merger with a bigger bank. All for a bank which ditched Tulunadu & shifted its head office to the parched city a long back along with training & ITES jobs. While nationalizing these banks the politicians told us it is to help poor but in reality the politicians helped business men like Vijaya Mallya, Nirav Modi & Mehul Choksi. No scheme was formed to help poor through banks. I doubt whether even recently introduced Mudra scheme is helping poor like pakodawals or chaiwalas.

Coming to moral police, anyone seen movie Sairat or Manasu Malligey? A movie of honour killing. A ditto love story. If I remember correctly lovers were from Shivajinagar area. Both lovers were killed leaving lone child orphan. Those were fledgling days of IT/BT industry in the parched city. But the IT/BT units in the parched city didn't cry we are afraid of honour killings. They didn't stop coming to the parched city. When all research facilities are centred in one city why should they go to anywhere else?

Linguistic moral police (should they be called just linguistic police?) hurt feelings of Hindus by defoiling sign boards with Devanagari script, the script which Hindus consider as sacred. Nobody cried the parched city is infected by linguistic moral police and IT/BT will flee. Why? They knew that the state & the central governments is least interested in developing infrastructure & eco system in other cities of Karnataka. Okay, the state government has now started drama of opening innovation hubs and is saying that is enough for creating eco system. And we still vote for these politicians who force us to shift to the parched city for jobs. We shift and purchase homes sold by real estate mafia at an extrodinary price. No doubt number of voters in Dakshina Kannada is falling - Slight dip in number of voters in Dakshina Kannada for Lok Sabha polls.

There is one more silicon valley in South India. Coming to that there was a big protest against a movie named Gadar: Ek Prem Katha. In many theatres of the city including one in Abids show was stopped. You know if the people are moral policing against a story of a movie (not even historical one) you can imagine what kind of moral policing going on in the darkness of reality.

Moral Policing is just an excuse uttered again and again by politicians aligned with real estate mafia of the parched city. It is just the number of research institutes the central government built in the parched city which is driving the IT/BT units to open offices there. The nexus of 70 years between political parties and the real estate mafia of the parched city which created this mammoth city. That is all!

We have to wait & see what will happen as all kinds of 'secular forces' are trying to join hands together for 2019 General Election.

It is just wastage of time to discuss on Moral Policing. We have to discuss more on relevant research & training facilties to be shifted to Tulunadu from the parched city for boosting the IT/BT growth here. Unless we do this Westernghats going to be burdened with projects to feed water to the parched city. Remember when Westernghat goes down it will not go down alone without taking Karnataka with it!

From where does he get (3,985-1,800) acres for MSEZ as stated in manifesto? And he still talks about Mitsui LNG Terminal while MoU with it is cancelled and new entrant is H-Energy. Why not he keeps himself updated if he is so much interested in Mangaluru?

Coming back to Lady Goschen hospital you yourself find out who first issued statement to news papers about MRPL CSR funds.

Do you believe he arranged for MRPL CSR funds?

What had happened is former MLA had learnt a lesson after denial of funds from the Andhra donor. He kept everything secret till funds were sanctioned by MRPL authorities which the former minister was not even aware of. If the former minister had known it who knows he would have diverted this fund also to the parched region.

If you have read earlier news papers no where there was mention of any mobilephone park in Chikkaballapur. It was included recently - Mobile phone components industry in Chikkaballapur. Why politicians are suddenly showing so much interest in Chikkaballapur? If we make an enquiry on all recent benami transactions we may know the reason.

And the other politician of same calibre is on running marathon. Wherever he smells a scent of defeat escapes from there.

General Election 2019 Manifesto for Tulunadu

DK got only ice candy in state budget: MLA Matandoor

After the central government gave ice candy, the state government also gave ice candy. (The central government allotted funds only for the parched city and called it allocation for Karnataka!). DK got ice candies from all three major parties of Karnataka so will vote for all of them.

That is joke if you have recovered from budgetary disappointments.

Tulunadu is covered by four MP seats namely - Kasaragod, Mangaluru, Udupi-Chikkamagaluru, Baindur-Shivamogga. Let us discuss here what should be Tulunadu's demand for this election on technological front. We will try to list such demands for Shivamogga & Chikkamagaluru also.

'70% of pollution in Mangaluru due to industries'

Mangaluru is getting polluted with chemical industries but high end jobs generated by these industries are going to the parched city through institutes like HPCL R&D facility and RGIPT and startup & IT industries built ancilliary for/through researches in these facilities thanks to a politician of this region who ditched Tulunadu.

The argument from bureaucrats is that the parched city is at the centre so distance to these cities is less. But one can easily verify that Mangaluru is at least average distance from Kochi, Mangalore and Vizag refineries.

Isn't the argument that a city at centre is suitable for a research centre serving these refinneries false? Isn't collaboration between industries and research centre more important? If Mangaluru have this research facility then it will be near all kinds of plants (Refinery, Petro chemicals, Gas, Cavern, Mooring etc) leading to better collaboration. Although direct flight between Vizag & Mangaluru is not available now, within another two years we can expect to have direct flight connection.

Demands for 'General Election 2019' are listed here.
  • Shift HPCL R&D Facility & RGIPT from the parched region to Mangaluru
  • Shift back all Syndicate Bank headoffice, ITES/BPO and training facilities to Manipal, Udupi
  • Shift all Corporation Bank ITES/BPO and training facilities to Mangaluru
  • Strengthening of CPCRI Kasaragod for research on jackfruit, oil palms, rubber etc
  • 'School of Sports' & 'School of Public Health' in Central University of Kerala, Kasaragod
  • Shift Institute of Wood Science and Technology (IWST), National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS), Center for Ecological Sciences to Shivamogga and Chikkamagaluru
If Uttar Pradesh wants a public sector bank then let it take Canara Bank as it has ditched coastal Karnataka a long back. As Vijaya Bank is getting merged and losing its identity let us not bother about it. Even this bank ditched Tulunadu a long back. (Unneccesarily people are creating noise on its losing identity after merger). All of these banks used Tulunadu as a stepping stone.

I hope North Karnataka will also make similar demand. For example, Dharwad can demand for shifting of any research institute which is more relevant to Mumbai Karnataka region and which does not fall under Defence and Aerospace domain. Or if Dharwad people are shy of asking for shifting then they can at least demand for opening of new central institutes like 'National Institute of Nano Technology' or 'Central Institute of Quantum Computing'. But I am giving no such concessions for Tulunadu because somebody has to bear the burden of reducing the population of the parched city.

Do you know that you will be solving the many of the problems of the parched city by making such shiting demands? If you have concern for a healthy Karnataka and a healthy India then demand for it. Otherwise like others rush to the parched city, stay there permanently paying hefty price to real estate mafia and then ruin Karnataka & India further.

Okay, here is a deal. Tuluvas will make shifting of research institutes from the parched city to Tulunadu/Malenadu as main voter demand for 2019 general election. If this is done I will start a new blog on 'a city designed for recyclability' and 'a country designed for recyclability'. I will discuss many more aspects of recyclability in that blog than covered in 'terrace/indoor garden & subsidy' post. Remember that I don't pay to somebody else to write these blogs or posts unlike those politicians publishing books, poems & novels in their names by paying others. So, I require a deal. A strong deal like the one politicians having with real estate mafia!

District Industries Centre Joint Director Gokuldas Nayak said the land has been identified at Karnire in Bantwal taluk for the setting up of industries in Dakshina Kannada. Special land acquisition officer is working on the identified land. When the land is made available, the industries will come up in the district, he felt.
Karnire, Athikaribettu Industrial Area (200 acres proposed by KIADB) near Mulki should not be confused with Canara Industrial Area in Bantwal.

Motivating land owners and individuals to collaborate in developing Green Mangaluru by setting up Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) stations on Dealer Owned Dealer Operated (DODO) model, GAIL said that land would be developed as CNG stations and for allied commercial activities on the lines of petrol stations.

A release here quoted GAIL Gas CEO A.K. Jana as saying, “People in Mangaluru will have a better quality of life by creating CNG infrastructure to promote cheaper and cleaner fuel CNG. Partnering with the company will also be an opportunity for those in possession of land to join hands with GAIL Gas in their endeavour, ‘Haccha Haridra Dakshin Kannada’ to provide clean fuel for the transport sector.”

The entire plot owned by a private owner would be developed exclusively for setting up of CNG stations as per the selection process of the company. After selection of the site, the plot owner applicant would enter into a long-term agreement for 10 or more years on lease basis.

While GAIL Gas would install and commission CNG equipment (compressor/ cascade/ dispenser, etc.,), the dealer would arrange for all requisite permission from statutory authorities at his cost. The dealer would have to conduct the day-to-day operations of the CNG station, including general maintenance for commission to be paid by GAIL Gas as per the guidelines.

There would be five charge areas: Bantwal, Belthangady, Mangaluru, Puttur and Sullia, 100 CNG stations, and a coverage of about 3.5 lakh households. The total capital investment for the project is ₹ 1,972 crore for 25 years benefiting 20 lakh population. The main supply of CNG for GAIL Gas would be from GAIL’s Kochi-Koottanad-Mangaluru-Bengaluru pipeline.

Phase four: MRPL may focus on petrochemical products

About 3 million tonnes of crude is planned to be processed per annum in phase four. MRPL has sought about 960 acres of land for the expansion from the State government and the Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board has been entrusted with land acquisition. The government has already issued a final notification under the KIADB Act to acquire lands identified in Permude, Kuthethur, Thenka Yekkar, Mulur, and Kandavara villages surrounding the existing MRPL plant in Mangaluru taluk.

The acquisition process however has not been smooth as landowner farmers have strongly been opposing the acquisition.

Polypropylene is used in a variety of applications, including consumder product packaging, electrical and equipment manufacturing, automobile, household appliances, construction material and other industries. MRPL had produced about 3.88 lakh tonnes of polypropylene in 2018-19 as against 2.94 lakh tonnes in 2017-18.

I am going to list other local vegan substitutes in 'berake attilu' (बॆरकॆ अट्टिल्). I may make 'berake attilu' 100% vegan compliant later (though currently dairy ingradients like ghee is used which can be easily substituted with vegan ghee like coconut ghee). Also going to discuss 'make in kudla' potentials of various local plant products for vegan export markets. Vegan food is gaining popularity in western & other developed countries due to environmental 2 3, ethical and health 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 reasons. Demand for coconut (powder/ flour 2/ milk/ cream/ butter/ ghee/ honey/syrup 2 3 4/ jelly/ pudding/ cereal 2 3 4/ snacks/cookies/crisps/ sweets/confections/ drinks/beverages/ yogurt 2), jackfruit (peeling 2, cutting, cooking & canning/packing, jackfruit in water jackfruit in brine 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14, packed jackfruit 1 2 - 'pottu gujje'/पॊट्ट् गुज्जॆ seems to be more suitable for all meat-substitute recipes, drying/dehydration 1 2 - dehydrated rags/cores/rinds can also be used in meat-substitute recipes after soaking, The Jackfruit Company 2 3 4 5 6, cereal, nutspread), seaweed (agar-agar instead of gelatin 2, mannitol, jam, crisps, salad etc 1) food products is growing mainly due to vegans, paleo/keto dieters 1 2. My request to vegan food festival organizers is to identify such market potentials also & provide exhibition place for substitute vegan products with domestic or export potentials. It is important to know about various diets like vegan, paleo, keto (& mark it so on product manufactured) & their market potentials (better to train foodproceesing/nutrition/dietitian students on them including ayurvedic diet, siridhanya diet etc; is there ayurvedic food processing & ayurvedic complaint ready made foods as per dosha? many ayurvedic doctors forget to list all diet items hence we need apps for ayurvedic, siridhanya etc; anyway patanjali noodles are quite popular; and processed food are strictly against siridhanya diet except may be stuffs like pappada/sandige; yes, there are foodie, nutrition & diet apps telling you which food is suitable before ordering or cooking as per recipe & tracking nutrition value of what you ate so far & what is missing and of course there are wearables 2 to track your diet though their usefulness is unknown). Domestic & export potentials have to be explored not only for food products but also plant-based other organic products (सावयव उत्पन्न).

Has any Tuluva tried 'Gujje Kori Sukka' or 'Gujje Kori Gasi' or 'Gujje Kori Saaru'? If not visit 'berake attilu' after year 2022 for the recipe. (hint: fry raw jackfruit pieces in oil or vegan ghee before adding to gravy; or if you don't like fried items then bake in oven after applying a small coat of coconut oil). I will write stuffs focusing on 'pottu gujje' and 'tuluva pelakai'. By that time I hopefully be promoting colocasia/taro 1 2 3 4 5 6 (kundapura maddi, colocasia esculenta) & giant taro (recchevu/marsan/mundi kande, alocasia macrorrhiza) tubers as superfood there! Alas, we don't even use taro tubers for sandige-pappada! Still I have hopes for 'thevu mela'/तेवुमेल before 2022!

So far Karnataka government has totally failed to encourage neera (coconut nectar) based honey/syrup/sugar/jaggery supporting units however a fresh hope is created recently - Rs 1 crore assistance for Neera Drinks Unit. Definitely neera has a great export market! Many of health conscious people are moving away from cane-sugar to alternatives like palm-sugar. How about producing 'neera jelly chocolate' by freezing neera with agar-agar from seaweed grown in Kundapur sea and applying a coat of palm-sugar or 'neera jam' 1 by mixing neera with coconut milk/cream or jackfruit seed/fruit pulp? As such coconut, jackfruit, jamoon (syzygium cumini), kuntala (syzygium caryophyllatum), kokum, star apple etc can be used for jelly mixtures, jelly chocolates/candies, other fruit preserves, stuffed cookies (stuffed with jams, jellies, creams etc; jackfruit pieces can even be used like tutti frutti in cookies). Various alternative flours like jackfruit flour, jackfruit seed flour, coconut flour 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 (veganization by flaxseed/chia+kalanamak+chickpea/mung for egg), breadfruit flour, eendu (caryota urens, added in a very small amount for its medicinal value) flour, kundapura maddi tuber flour can be used for cookies/crisps, chapathis/tortillas, breads/nuns/rotis, cakes/pancakes, pizza bases, pasta, noodles etc (can think of healthy edible gums for binding). We can think of mixing herbal leaves juices/pastes like kuntala leaves juice for preparation of herbal jellies & other food products with medicinal values as per ayurvedic/allopathic recommended guidelines on daily dosage.

We should also find a way to exploit molasses & oilcakes for 'Nutritional Yeast' 2 3 once Brahmavar Sugar Factory is revived. So many edible oil manufacturing companies in Mangaluru produce oilcakes including coconut oilcakes as byproduct.

We can cultivate other popular vegan vegetables like 'heart of palm' 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 (<- vagan cheese/mayonnaise/cream). This has nothing to do with the palm culitivation project for edible oil production - Oil palm growers likely to get nursery, Farmers urged to grow oil palm in clusters. But heart of palm processing waste can be used for producing palm flour - Study shows king palm flour is high in dietary fibres and minerals (once upon a time we were used to use 'caryota urens' eendu/ईंद् leaves for decoration instead of plastic stuffs). Palm cultivation can be under agroforestry - 1 2.

I have already talked about exploring possibilities of lotus cultivation for foxnut/makhana 2 3 and other lotus based vegetables along with pashchima vahini supported backwaters.

Who knows one day Tulunadu may have foxnut, heart of palm, seaweed, mushroom 2, jackfruit, coconut, colocasia/taro processing units just like cashewnut processing units (including bakeries; whether there is any integrated cashewnut processing unit in Tulunadu producing bakery products starting from raw cashewnuts?) as vegan/keto/paleo food habits are steadily growing throught the developed world. I have neither tasted chashewnut chocolate 2 nor foxnut chocolate so far (infact I have stopped eating chocolates a long back). But before that I wish to taste 'puffed jack seed chocolate' (not chocolate coated fried jackfruit/seed sticks) at least once in lifetime. At the rate at which people are coating food items with chocolates I think we may soon have chocolate coated banana chips, coconut chips/flakes and even kurlari/poddolu (puffed rice) etc.

I think there is scope to make 'jackfruit peeling machine' popular like this - Coconut dehusking machine becoming popular in Mangaluru.

Emami Agrotech's Rs 250 crores 43 acres edible-oil refinery (palm & sunflower) is coming up at MSEZ. No further news on proposed Orient Source HK Limited (Commodity Trading & Logistics) 121 acres project. Probably Campco also be putting up Coconut Factory in MSEZ land only. Looks like MSEZ is becoming a 'Food Processing Park' or a 'Special Agriculture Zone'. Don't be surprised if DK MP takes credit for establishing 'Special Agriculture Zone' as per his manifesto during next general election campaign!

In & around Baikampady we have now edible oil refiners like Ruchi Soya, Adani Wilmar, Anagha (Sun Premium), Rajashree packagers and Emami. And few others like MK Agrotech have storage facilities. There is lot of potential in Tulunadu for other type of food processing industries also. I am waiting for the day we will have 'Udupi Shrikrishna brand' just like Patanjali brand!

“The plans of KCCI for the next one year will be developing KCCI as a recognized alternate dispute redressal center. Ensure that our gets a commercial court. Work towards development of infrastructure for information technology and connected industry in our district. Promoting native start-ups and industry, academia collaboration. Giving push to the cashew industry for high trajectory growth in the district and development of tourism.

“The Government of India is making an endeavour to implement various legislative measures having economic implications keeping in mind the ease of doing business. In view of the new policy of Government of India to encourage Alternative Dispute Resolution in respect of commercial disputes, the KCCI has taken the initiative to setup a full-fledged Alternative Dispute Resolution [ADR] centre in Mangaluru. This centre will be run by a team of professionals to ensure speedy and inexpensive dispute resolution mechanism within the purview of the Arbitration and Conciliation Act, 1996 as amended from time to time.

“In Karnataka, there are three courts of district and sessions judges that have been designated as commercial courts for the entire state, two are in Bengaluru and one is in Ballari. The court with jurisdiction of D.K and Mangaluru is based in Bengaluru. Given the size of Karnataka, it is important that a commercial court with jurisdiction for DK and surroundings districts is established in Mangaluru not Bangalore. KCCI has already taken up the issue with Department of Law and will focus all our energies toward this. This would ensure a more equitable access to justice, while strengthening the ease of doing business, he added.

“KCCI will also work with the district administration to set up adequate leisure infrastructure in the city to support the growing needs of Human Resources in the IT field. KCCI is working on setting up a Native Start-up cell to motivate, hand hold and fund entrepreneurs from our District to solve problems facing our district and build them into gainful businesses and industries. A dedicated team is already formed to spearhead this initiative.

Mangaluru: The various plans to develop tourism along the river banks have faced a setback with no funds being released for this purpose.

The proposal submitted to the state government for the creation of 13 jetties on the banks of Netravati and Phalguni Rivers in the city are still remaining stuck in the files. Along with this, two years have passed since approval was received for various developmental works to be undertaken at Tannirbavi and Sasihitlu beaches in Mangaluru under the union governments ‘Swadesh Darshan Coastal Tourism Circuit’. However, the funds for the same have not yet been released.

The proposal for the construction of 13 jetties at the cost of Rs 26 crore had been submitted to the State Tourism Department. The locations for the jetties included near Kuloor bridge along Phalguni river, this bank of Bangrakuloor river, Sultan Battery, near Tannirbavi at Kuloor north sandy area, old port, Kasba Bengre, old port near the ferry service, near Bengre sand feet, near old ferry at Jeppinamogaru on Netravati river bank, near Ullal old ferry and at Sasihitlu estuary.

The river festival which was organised in January at Kuloor along the Phalguni River successfully attracted scores of tourists. After this, two institutions were also given the permission to conduct water adventure sports at Phalguni River. But since there is no functional jetty here, it is getting really tedious to conduct water sports properly here.

Swadesh Darshan remains unimplemented

The central government had created ‘Swadesh Darshan Coastal Tourism Circuit’ in 2015-16 with the aim to provide encouragement to tourism along the coast. To take profit of this scheme, the state tourism department selected Tannirbavi and Sasihitlu beaches from DK district and submitted a project report to the union government concerning the various developmental works at the cost of Rs 25,35,79,000.

Under the scheme, many development works at the two beaches including the provision of facilities were proposed at the cost of Rs 25.35 crore. Almost a year has passed by since the approval was given for the proposal, but not a dime has yet been released. Since no funds have come for the same, the plans for the development of the beaches have remained stuck in a file.

The proposal

The proposal including the a Tourist Facilitation Centre and a lifeguard training school at the cost of Rs 4.23 crore, 49 benches at various locations for the tourists to seat at the cost of Rs 11.09 lakh, 4 lifeguard watch tower at the cost of Rs 19.45 lakh, solid waste management unit at the cost of Rs 4.01 lakh, public service facilities at the cost of Rs 31.13 crore, installation of solar street lights at the cost of Rs 20 lakh, installation of CCTV cameras at the cost of Rs 40 lakh, beach cleaning equipment at the cost of Rs 75 lakh, water sports equipment at the coast of Rs 1 crore, walkie-talkie, hand mic, control system and beach maintenance unit at the coast of Rs 20 lakh, beach marshal vehicle at the coast of Rs 10 lakh, lifebuoy, safety tube, safety bed at the cost of Rs 15 lakh, cubical shower block at the cost of Rs 20 lakh and construction of floating jetties near Kuloor bridge, sultan battery and Bangra Kuloor at the coast of Rs 4.80 crore.

Waiting for approval

A proposal has already been sent to the state tourism department with the aim to encourage tourism at Phalguni and Netravati rivers by constructing floating jetties and providing basic facilities. We are waiting for the approval. Stressing the need to boost helicopter linkage between Mangaluru and other places of tourist interest within 150 km radius of the port, he said it will give a major boost to tourism.

Stating that he is working on a proposal in this regard, Ramana said it will be submitted to the Chief Secretary of Karnataka. The State government has to identify the places of tourist interests, and give land parcels for helipads (if they are not there). Once these things are ready, private players will be there to invest, he said.

Most of the cruise vessels arrive at the Port in the morning and sail out by evening. The passengers don’t have much time in their hand. Since they want to travel comfortably and safely, this initiative can help, he said.

Cruise traffic

To a query on cruise traffic at the port, he said 26 cruise vessels called at the Port in the last financial year. For 2019-20, the port authorities have got confirmation from 23 cruise vessels. More confirmations are on the way, he said.

More cruise vessels are expected to call at the New Mangalore Port during 2019-20 than last year, he said, adding that the first cruise vessel of the season is expected to call at berth No. 4 on November 4.

On the contribution of cruise traffic to the city’s economy, he said there will be around 2,500 people on each cruise vessel. On an average, a passenger spends around $200 per head per visit.
We will discuss how to carry out spiritual cruise tourism in detail later when a high-quality Spiritual Ashram comes up near Mangaluru port (say somewhere between Mangaluru & Udupi). Till now there were a very few news related to spiritual activities in the coastal region - ‘Puthige Moola Mutt to be spiritual centre’ and there was a mutt wanting to establish an ashram in Gokarna. For the time being next two steps should be (1) to explore possibilities of arranging fully on cruise spiritual training courses along with pilgrimmage cruise-heli tourism to Udupi and other temples of interest in colloboration with international spiritual organizations like ISKCON; can work on Mumbai-Maldives cruise also for domestic market and (2) to establish Spiritual Ashrams or Philosophical Study Centres discussed earlier. Ashram should have ability conduct vlasses in various languages.

By the way note that non-spiritual tourism activities of cruise tourists like visiting non-pilgrimmage places are not disturbed by adding 'on cruise spiritual training' or 'pilgrimmage visits' to their schedule.

ಒಟ್ಟು 19.75 ಚದರ ಕಿ.ಮೀ. ವಿಸ್ತೀರ್ಣ ಈ ಕುದ್ರುನ್ನು ಪ್ರವಾಸಿ ತಾಣವಾಗಿ ರೂಪಿಸುವ ನಿಟ್ಟಿನಲ್ಲಿ 2011ರಲ್ಲಿ ರಾಜ್ಯ ಸರಕಾರದ ಪ್ರವಾಸೋದ್ಯಮ ಇಲಾಖೆ ಆಸಕ್ತಿ ವಹಿಸಿ ಪರಿಶೀಲನೆ ಕೂಡ ಆಗಿತ್ತು. ಪ್ರವಾಸಿ ತಾಣವಾಗಿ ಅಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿ ಪಡಿಸಲು ಸಿದ್ಧತೆಗಳಾಗಿತ್ತು. ದ್ವೀಪಕ್ಕೆ ಬೋಟು ಸೌಲಭ್ಯಕ್ಕೂ ಚಾಲನೆ ನೀಡಲಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಆದರೆ ಯಾವುದೇ ಪ್ರಗತಿಯಾಗಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಹಳೆ ಬಂದರು ಪ್ರದೇಶದಲ್ಲಿ ನೇತ್ರಾವತಿ ಮತ್ತು ಫಲ್ಗುಣಿ ನದಿಯಲ್ಲಿನ ಮೂರು ದ್ವೀಪಗಳನ್ನು ಪ್ರವಾಸಿ ಆಕರ್ಷಣಿಯ ತಾಣಗಳಾಗಿ ಅಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿ ಪಡಿಸುವ ಬಗ್ಗೆಯೂ ಚಿಂತನೆಗಳು ನಡೆದಿತ್ತು. ಕುಡ್ಲ ಕುದ್ರುನಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದಷ್ಟು ಅಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿ ಕಾರ್ಯಗಳು ಆಗಿದ್ದರೂ ಪ್ರವಾಸಿಗರನ್ನು ಆಕರ್ಷಿಸುವಲ್ಲಿ ಹೇಳಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ಯಶಸ್ಸು ಪಡೆದಿಲ್ಲ.

ಸಣ್ಣ ದ್ವೀಪ, ಸಾಗರ ಮತ್ತು ಹಿನ್ನೀರು ಪ್ರವಾಸೋದ್ಯಮದಲ್ಲಿ ನಮ್ಮ ನೆರೆಯ ರಾಜ್ಯಗಳಾದ ಕೇರಳ, ಗೋವಾ ರಾಜ್ಯಗಳ ಸಾಧನೆಯ ನಿದರ್ಶನ ನಮ್ಮ ಮುಂದಿದೆ. ಸಾಗರ ತೀರದಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರವಾಸೋದ್ಯಮ ಅಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿಗೆ ಸಿಆರ್ಝಡ್ ನಿಯಮಗಳು ಅಡಚಣೆಯಾಗುತ್ತಿವೆೆ ಎಂಬ ಮಾತುಗಳಿವೆ. ಕೇರಳದಲ್ಲಿ 8 ಸಣ್ಣ ದ್ವೀಪಗಳು ಪ್ರವಾಸೋದ್ಯಮ ಕೇಂದ್ರಗಳಾಗಿ ಅಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿ ಹೊಂದಿ ಪ್ರವಾಸಿಗರನ್ನು ಆಕರ್ಷಿಸುತ್ತಿವೆ. ಸಮುದ್ರ ತೀರದಲ್ಲಿ ರೆಸಾರ್ಟ್ ಗಳನ್ನು ಮಾಡಲು ಕಾನೂನಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಕೆಲವು ತೊಡಕುಗಳಿವೆ. ಆದರೆ ಪರಿಸರ ಸಹ್ಯ ಪ್ರವಾಸೋದ್ಯಮವನ್ನು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಬೆಳೆಸಬಹುದಾಗಿದೆ. ಕೇರಳ ಇದೇ ಮಾದರಿಯನ್ನು ಅನುಸರಿಸುತ್ತಿದೆ. ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಹಿನ್ನೀರುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಇರುವ ಬೋಟ್ ಹೌಸ್ಗಳು ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ಉದಾಹರಣೆ. ಇದಲ್ಲದೆ ಈಗ ಹಿನ್ನೀರುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಶಾಶ್ವತ ಬೋಟ್ ಹೌಸ್ ಎಂಬ ಹೊಸ ಪರಿಕಲ್ಪನೆ ಪ್ರವರ್ಧಮಾನಕ್ಕೆ ಬರುತ್ತಿದೆ.

ಒಳನಾಡಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಹಲವಾರು ಹಿನ್ನೀರುಗಳಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಕುದ್ರುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರವಾಸೋದ್ಯಮಕ್ಕೆ ವಿಪುಲ ಅವಕಾಶಗಳಿವೆ. ಇವುಗಳನ್ನು ಕೇರಳ ಮಾದರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿ ಪಡಿಸಿದರೆ ಪ್ರವಾಸಿ ತಾಣಗಳಾಗಿ ಗಮನ ಸೆಳೆಯುವುದರಲ್ಲಿ ಸಂಶಯವಿಲ್ಲ.

ಕಳೆದ 3 ವರ್ಷಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರವಾಸಿಗರ ಸಂಖ್ಯೆಯೂ ಏರಿಕೆಯಾಗಿದೆ. 2016 -17ರಲ್ಲಿ 1 ಕೋಟಿ, 2017-18ರಲ್ಲಿ 1.2 ಕೋಟಿ, 2018-19ರಲ್ಲಿ 1.4 ಕೋಟಿ ಮತ್ತು 2019ರಲ್ಲಿ ಈಗಾಗಲೇ 1 ಕೋಟಿ ಪ್ರವಾಸಿಗರು ಬಂದು ಹೋಗಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಬೀಚ್ ಹೋಂ ಸ್ಟೇಗಳಿಗೆ ಬೇಡಿಕೆ ಹೆಚ್ಚು.

Mangaluru: In a move that will vastly enhance safety standards at Mangalore International Airport (MIA), Airports Authority of India (AAI) has taken up phase II work of parallel taxiway and widening of runway safety basic strip area. Incidentally, phase I work on the parallel taxiway measuring around 550 metres each, in two stretches, was completed in December 2016, and work on the balance 1,350 metres of this taxiway is presently under way.

Completion of the work will ensure that the turnaround time for aircraft landing and taking off from MIA will be vastly reduced, says V V Rao, airport director, MIA. With reduced occupancy time of the active runway, passengers too will save on time with timely arrivals and take-offs, Rao told TOI, adding even the airlines will save on pricey aviation turbine fuel that they would otherwise have to use for taxiing and idling purposes.

The move to double the runway safety basic strip area from the current width of 75metres, from the centre of the runway, will also ensure greater safety for aircraft using the airport. This basic strip area is usually an unpaved area flanking the main runway, Rajeev Kumar Gupta, joint general manager (engineering-civil), MIA, said. AAI needs 33 acres on the South (Adyapady) side of the runway to complete the work to a length of 2,500 metres, he said.

AAI has already commenced work on this project to a length of 1,500 metres on the Malavoor side, and the balance work will be executed once the Dakshina Kannada district administration hands over the remaining 1,000 metres of land (approximately 33 acres), for which a public hearing has already been done, he noted. The strip runs the entire length of the runway, and is an important safety feature for the airport, with a table-top runway, he added.

AAI has enhanced the runway end safety area (RESA) on both sides of the runway to 240mx90m against the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) recommendation of 90mx90m, he said, adding this was 174m x 90 m along runway 24 and 240 m x 90 m along runway 6. This RESA is more than adequate for the 4D category that MIA is, and for the kind of aircraft that the airport presently handles, Gupta added.

I don't think Adani Group is going to spend so much money on Mangaluru airport and then hike passenger service fees when economically cheaper (thanks to Udan?) Kannur airport is already giving tough competition. Mangaluru airport is struggling when other airports like Belagavi are getting connected to Tirupati, Varanasi etc through Udan scheme! Whether runway expansion within a scheduled time is a clause in the contract between Adani & the government? Otherwise runway expansion promise is just a promise to pacify public protesting against take over.

Decrease in Mangaluru-Mumbai flight frequency

Summa: Number of passengers travelling through MIA is increasing year after year. But number of daily flights between Mangaluru & Mumbai have decreased from seven to three. Air India direct flight used to be full but now after conversion to indirect flight via Coimbatore flight load has come down by half. But flight charges have increased.

Whether number of passengers is really increasing (as per first statement in above summary) even after competition from Kannur? Does pulling out direct flight mean that the government wants to discourage travelling by flights?

Whether they are going to come upo with some kind of inland waterway like Kerala for goods movement? We can explore feasibility of extending Kerala inland waterway itself upto Goa & beyond if Goa & Maharashtra cooperates. We have discussed other things like BRTS, airport waterway tunnel already.

Whether the Multimodal Logistics plan includes seamless connectivity from 'National Waterways' to Multimodal Logistics Park so that boats/barges will not face much problems to reach logistics park? - 1 2 3 4. Whether there is any plan (Karnataka Maritime Board?) to extend 'National Waterway 3' under construction in Kerala through Karnataka to Goa and furher? Let us hope that proposed new bridges across Gurupura river (& other rivers also) allow seamless movement of barges under them.

Looking at current cyclonic scenario I doubt there is any scope for highspeed boats which I was proposing earlier.
